to keep the power in check
to keep the wisdom circumspect
as per the way they see all things
like those fancy diamond rings
hanging off their best wife
on the pearl-handled knife
for stabbing folk in the back
and turning doves into crime
and telling you that God
would drive around all the time
and telling you that Jesus
was a pencil-necked geek
always making computers
and jet planes for the meek
then the trumpet sounds
a patriotic call...
and then they cut the taxes,
and everybody falls
except the men of today,
and the wives that they pay,
yeah, the men who had mastered,
the science of what we say
and when you look real deep
and while they're fast asleep
or while the experts opine
on the weakness of your sign
that it all suddenly hits you
responsibility might fit too
when we're awake and nothing less
when we're aware of the distress...
