For those of you who know of it, Have gone or imagined going:

BurningMan needs help
5000 signatures needed, less than [2060] for now...

Sign the Petition!!!

BurningMan needs a bit of help,
and it needs it fast, so please read on. As you may or may not have heard, the Washoe County Board of Commissioners have refused Burning Man a permit to use property they own near Gerlach, from which the event is staged. This staging area is the ranch from which all operations are run, and where all the gear is stored. Apparently, if they can't use this land, it will make it nearly impossible to organize
the event.

BM has requested that as many people as possible show up at the county meeting on June 10th in Reno Nevada to voice their opinions, and that those who can't make it write letters to the Reno Gazette voicing their displeasure. I figure that a petition wouldn't hurt either, so
here's the plan:

They need to get at least 5000 signatures by June 10th TODAY!!!. Please go to the petition site at the link below immediately, sign it, and tell this to as many sympathetic people as possible.

Other news:
• We wanted to alert everyone that we were in the unfortunate position
of needing to file a lawsuit against the Washoe County Board of
Supervisors and Washoe County in order to avoid penalties related to
the four Special Use permits we were denied. So, today, June 6, we
did. A press release with our "official" words related to the
lawsuit and our goals can be found at
http://www.burningman.com/pdf/press_releases/press_release_06062003.pdf.

If you're wondering why the heck we're in this predicament in the
first place, the fact is that we're rather surprised ourselves. Our
opinion is that the appeal document is filled with anecdotal
information and conjecture. Unfortunately, the Commissioners voted
to uphold it, which was a bit of a curve ball, in the face of strong public and
expert testimony. (We're working now to get an electronic copy of the
appeal for your perusal. Right now it's supposed to be linked from
the agenda from May 13 in an embedded link, but we've been unable to
get it to work, and the nice folks at the Clerk's office haven't been
able to provide any additional information just yet. You can find the
May 13, 2003 agenda at http://207.228.25.168/mgrsoff/2003Agendas/.
We'll post it as soon as we have information.)

And, if you missed it last time, here again is how you can help:
-- Come Join Us Tuesday, June 10, in Reno, NV at the Washoe County
Board of Commissioners meeting
We're planning a show of strength at the next Washoe County Board of
Commissioners meeting, being held June 10 in Reno at 2:00 PM - try to
be there by 1:30. Each meeting starts with an opportunity for public
comment; each speaker gets three minutes to share with the
Commissioners their opinions on any topic that is NOT on that night's
agenda.

You don't need to be from Washoe County or even Nevada to speak - our
goal is to get as many Burners as possible there to show the
Commissioners the importance of Burning Man to the financial and
cultural sustainability of the area. So, grab your friends from your
theme camp and carpool out to Reno. It will be a blast! If you're
planning to attend, email rae@burningman.com so we can have an idea
of the expected turnout and send out updates if we have them.

Meeting Details:
Tuesday, June 10
2:00 PM - try to show up at 1:30
Washoe County Commissioners Chambers
1001 E. 9th Street
Reno, NV
Map: http://makeashorterlink.com/?E2C625B74
Exit off of 80 in Reno at Wells (Exit #14) and head North. Make a
right on 9th and a left into the Washoe County offices' parking lot.

-- Write a Letter to the Editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal
We're also playing this game in the court of public opinion, and that
includes the media. Again, we're hoping to show Washoe County
residents that Burners are important contributors to their area -
particularly in the financial realm. So, tell the Gazette-Journal
your tales of the amount of money you spend in Nevada on your way to
the event, how many times you've returned to the area because of
being introduced to it by Burning Man, and any other ways that you
have positively contributed to their County.

Letters are limited to 200 words and submissions that are considered
potentially libelous will not be published, so keep to the facts and
keep it short. Please include all of your accurate contact
information (no playa names for this purpose, please!)

Information on submitting letters electronically is available at
http://www.rgj.com/helpdesk/news/letter_to_editor.php or you can
also fax your letter to the editor at 775-788-6458 or send it by USPS
to Reno Gazette-Journal, Letters to the Editor, P.O. Box 22000, Reno,
NV 89520.

Even if your letter does not get printed, the Gazette-Journal keeps a
tally of the number of letters received for and against issues, and
publishes that data on a weekly basis.

We appreciate very much everyone's patience and effort on this
important issue! Stay tuned for more information!

i signed. i'll try to pass it around as widely as possible, probably by posting it in my LiveJournal or something.

i've heard that they have contigency plans in place for the staging issue. BLM has already granted the permit for the playa itself, as i recall, so we have the space (though God knows where else all the necessary infrastructure shit can be deployed from...)

so how is burningman like Glastonbury? Have you even been to either?

Touch the profane ground with my sacred feet? Are you mad?

I meant that they were similar in the fact you go to an inhospitable place (middle of a desert, a big field that cows shit in for the other 51 weeks of the year) where you're forced to spend the time being nice to absolute wankers who are either offering you knitted yoghurt or to realign your chakras. The only major difference is that Burningman seems to have it as mandatory that you dress up as a Cyberman and don't mind walking away with skin cancer at the end of it.

Mr Tricks
16:54 / 12.06.03
hahaha....

as highland deserts go you've got about an equal chance of frostbite as skin cancer...

and I'd truely consider a difference between a cow pasture (there are plenty of 'em out here in California) and a prehistoric lake bed, but I suppose that's splitting hairs when compared to say... a small small room.

{%}I suppose an unwillingness to touch profane ground with sacred feet might just disqualify you for many a good time as well. Too bad so sad, you probably won't be missed {/%}

on a slightly more serious note:
• I'm writing this note to you from "across the pond" after Larry Harvey's
successful talk at Oxford University in England. The talk went off without a
hitch and was appreciated by a very enthusiastic audience in the atmosphere
of an old library/lounge at the Oxford Union.

The day of the speech coincided with the events in Washoe County on the same
day. One can only be in one place at one time, though Danger Ranger is
trying to teach us all how to "bi-locate" we've not yet absorbed the nuances
that allow for it to actually happen. That being the case we were here, they
were there, and you all were where you are!

You'll see from the report which should follow from Andie Grace including
URLs that the efforts in Washoe County were very successful. Thanks to
EVERYONE for the role you may have taken in bringing this political coup
off. Thanks for the letters to the editors of the RGJ, thanks for the online
petition (though many don't like this sort of thing, it's a valuable show of
strength in this case), thanks for the distribution of buttons in Reno,
thanks for forwarding the information to friends, thanks for showing up at
the meeting, thanks for speaking, and just thanks to everyone!

I hate to ask for another bit of contribution from all of you. And, if you
didn't get involved before you have another chance to have your voice heard
on another subject.

The Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area (NCA) Management Plan:

In addition to the recent process with Washoe county concerning our building
permits we DO go through a yearly permit process with the BLM. For the most
part this process has been going very very smoothly. The permit we receive
is called a Special Recreation Permit, and is designed to outline the
requirements we must follow to have the event on the Black Rock Desert.

In December 2000 President Clinton signed into law the creation of a
National Conservation Area for the Black Rock Desert
http://www.blackrockhighrock.org/ seeking to preserve it as the pioneers
experienced it in the mid-late 1800s. Burning Man supported this legislation
with the condition that we were specifically written into the legislation.
We were. Large Scale events are allowed to happen as long as they don't
conflict with the intent of the NCA. Burning Man doesn't. All is good.
HOWEVER....

The NCA will have a management plan. A document by which the administrators
of the area will use as a guide to oversee planning, preservation and
visitor services. The Management Plan for the NCA has been in development
for over a year. The DRAFT of this plan is currently available for public
comment. Participants and other users attended meetings in late April in
Sacramento, Reno, Winnemucca, Cedarville and Gerlach and commented on the
DRAFT Management Plan. The deadline for public comment is June 16th, but you
still have an opportunity to voice your opinion and we NEED you to do so.

You should know that I, Marian Goodell, have sat on a 20-some member
Sub-Committee combined from and related to the two regional Resource
Advisory Committees. The members are from a wide variety of user types
representing groups such as historical trail advocates, wilderness, Native
American, wildlife experts, off road vehicles, ranchers, public recreation,
state agencies and rock hounds. We were asked to work with each other and
the BLM, to review ideas and comment on progress being made on the
Management Plan. I attended 5 meetings (9 total days) spread over a year and
1/2, and I can actually say my presence in these meetings went a long way
towards protecting the interests of the event and the 30,000 users that
enjoy the Black Rock Desert during and at times other than during the
existence of Black Rock City.

The results of this cooperative effort between the users and the BLM is the
current incarnation of the DRAFT Management Plan. The preferred alternative
is accepted by most members of the RAC Sub-Committee, but everyone see
possible changes.

At this TIME Burning Man is happy with the current plan and the Proposed
Alternative as it applies directly to the event. If you're a constant user
of the desert and have interests in other areas you may still want to look
at the plan and comment on areas that effect you.

HOWEVER...and this is where YOU come in...The last time I attended a meeting
of the Sub-Committee the BLM announced that The Wilderness Society (TWS) had
started a online form-based letter writing campaign
http://ga1.org/campaign/blkrock_tws stating their interests. And, due to the
fact that the opinion of one of the Sub-Committee members was of value to
TWS they have decided to support and echo her thoughts on several issues.

HER OPINIONS on the LOCATIONS used for LARGE SCALE (type 3 and 4, the latter
of which is us) events does NOT jive with the opinion of the Burning Man
organization. OR serve the interest of the PUBLIC. Thought the BLM has asked
for users to NOT send form letters, TWS chose to do exactly that.
UNFORTUNATLEY, their form letter states:

"I urge you to limit large-scale public events to the far south playa. All
the proposed alternatives allow events to occur too far to the north. I am
similarly concerned that all the alternatives designate too much area as
"front country;" front country should be only where it is now-on the south
end of the playa."

If this is actually done, we would have to move back to the more southern
portion where we were in 1998 and 1999. The area there is too small, would
cause problems with the building of the event, effect the safety of the
participants, and endanger the future of the event.

The BLM reminded me that we MUST send supportive "we like it" sorts of
letters in addition to the "please change it" type. And, that though this
effort by The Wilderness Society is merely an automated message... Burning
Man should re-state it's position on supporting the current Preferred
Alternative and it's management of Large Scale Events, and the definition of
the boundaries for the Front Country and Playa use are for Type 3 and 4
events should stand as stated in the Preferred Alternative.

Please go here:

http://www.blackrockhighrock.org/commentEmail.asp

And counteract the efforts of 2300 mis-informed button-pushers by suggesting
you support large scale recreation as it's currently proposed in the
Preferred Alternative for the DRAFT Management Plan for the NCA.

You CAN download the entire plan from the web site. However, it takes a
great deal of time and includes more information than you'll need in this
life time. I suggest you review only the Preferred Alternative and its
Recreation section if you're so inclined.

In case you don't think your effort can make the difference. You should know
that as a result of our participants efforts in responding to the current
political crisis in Washoe County we are helping to change the minds of the
politicians. Two previously unsupportive members have agreed to reconsider
our special use permits and have committed to visiting our property before
their next scheduled meeting June 24. They will then be in a better position
to judge our case more fairly.

Who says democracy doesn't work?

YOU can make a difference.

We do need your help. Please take the time.

Thanks!

From Scotland.....

"Old library/lounge"....for God's sake. Just for that I am going to campaign to have Burningman abolished. And the Blue Man Group.

I never realized you where so Crotchity Haus...

Is the phrase "atmosphere of an old library/lounge at the Oxford Union" not reverant enough? OR is it the image of some hedonistic Californian rebel wannbe getting dust all over the carpet that has you all puffed up?

but go right ahead, I'm sure those poor old country folks in Wasco County would welcome an intellectual giant like yourself comming in and saving them from the insuffently culturally attuned ludites that attend burningman.

Would you like me to point out exactly where in the desert Gerlach is?

You are being singularly humorless about this one, Tricksy. Also rude, half-comprehensible, dim and overusing the sarcasm denotations. Hardly likely to win friends or influence people.

You can't have a library and a lounge in one place. Simple physics. and since they let Kermit in, I imagine whoever this Harvey fellow didn't exactly turn over the money-changers' tables.

Mr Tricks

• Humorless... hmm perhaps in relation to the er, pompousness of the posts.

• Rude... I don't see it, I thought I was matching the tone of some of the other posts here, still, appologies offered

• half-comprehensible... certainly

• dim... not for me to say, however I have been to burningman, does that count?

• overusing the sarcasm denotations... didn't know there was a quota, I'll keep it confined to this thred then.

• Hardly likely to win friends or influence people... Well that's the interesting thing about online communities eh? However that cuts both ways and I could include, that your original post did not read in a particularly "friendly" manor either. Is there blame to be laid for anyone? I don't know... I figured this thred was becoming a sort of Ranking session (as we used to call it in NY) is that what you folks in the UK call "taking the piss?"

SO getting back to the question at hand, am I to infer that the abolition of Burningman is appropiate punishment for breaking the law of Simple Physics?
Well it wouldn't be the first law broken there . . .
