Can it be?!

I searched the book forum. And except for the "Two smart new(ish) childrens books that rock!" thread (where one moomin book is brushed as one of several books), there is no moomin thread yet!

It was Barbelith, that brought these books to my attention (I started the third book today). Still it appears, we only talked about the books here and there. And if there is no thread yet, then maybe I´ll start one, when I´ve finished the book. Since I´m a naturally slothful person, everyone feel free to start one if there isn´t one yet.

Someone once said (maybe Haus or Id) that there was a thread about muslim women wearing the veil in the Headshop. I've looked and and looked and all I can find is the drivers licence one in the Switchboard, which refers to wearing the veil but isn't the one I want.

Is there one then or was it all just rumour?

It's in switchboard, but the closest I found was this.

Hi, I'm looking for a thread, I think it was started by Money Shot, about the Amazon river drying up. It was very scary and was full of most useful facts and figures, but I can't remember what the forum was. By brain keeps saying the Temple, because that's where I associate hir suit, but I don't think it falls within it's remit. I've been googling and scrolling and searching to no avail. Can you help me, Barbelith?

Would this be it?

"Old Dog Learns New Tricks" ...I just skimmed a bit, and there's mention of Brazil and Rivers....

Yes! Brilliant, cheers. I saw that originally, but I thought it was the thread about Money Shot and the tea so I skimmed past it. Thanks muchly!

Ha, turns out what I was looking for was in the tea thread all along. Thanks again!

Looking for the thread of first snapping or cracking or earth shattering moment you had to make you realize the world was larger/smaller/more literal than you ever thought it was/is/might be? Memory tells me I read it in Conversation.

Earth shattering, linguistic mind banalities (uh huh) seem to be a specialty 'round these parts.

have you tried whacking site:www.barbelith into a google search?
keywords, snatched phrases you remember the name of other contributors... all those things rock a google.

like, i can find stuff about big brother without searching for big brother. all i have to do is site-search for 'house' and 'ganesh'. obviously the words 'big brother' would help, but you can wiggle through the google cracks even if you don't know the main keywords or thread title.

Confounded. I'm looking for a thread that attempts to define the middle class and possibly the emergence thereof, though I think it was started and fell off the map maybe a year and half ago. "Middle Class Woes" I believe was the title, but Google isn't being helpful and I don't know if I'm just misremembering.

If a thread doesn't exist (or can't be located) I'll start (new)one, tomorrow.

Thanks, toks, for the reply, but I still havn't found the one I requested earlier, though in the interim I think I posted it in another thread.

Does anybody remember a thread (in Creation?) about letters that were never sent, that is to say, those that were unsendable due to a temporal issue or extremely personal content?

I couldn't track it down myself with use of any of the recommended search engines so I'm just relying on you guys!

Is there a thread like this one on screenplays for comic book scripting? I vaguely remember reading the how of sequential storytelling here on barbelith, but I may be imagining it.

If not, is there anywhere else on the web that tells it well? Should I start a new thread?

There was a thread where somebody (legba?) asked for advice on digital cameras in the £100 range. I can't find it.

Who can?

Hi again. I'm looking for a past Conversation thread that may or may not be about the use of photoshop to alter images of the female body.

I'm after a specific link to a retouching company that specializes in photoshopping female celebrities. Featured art included shaving off Jessica Biel's butt, and eliminating a third of Nicole Ritchie. Strange, but true.

Thanks for any assistance in advance.

I've looked for that thread a few times but never found it. It popped up recently and I studiously forgot to remember the name of the thread.

The site was down, though maybe just for maintenance.

Examples of digital manipulation in celebrity pictures, perhaps? But indeed the agency's website appears to be down.

Oh, and d'mandem, perhaps the Scripts thread might be of use to use. Furthermore I can second the recommendation for the Mark Salisbury books.

More an 'is there a thread?', but i want to learn more about 'outsider history' (the histories of those that 'don't exist' - queer, native, female etc) and i was wondering if there are already any threads in place that approach the fact that a load of people and experiences go untold (or misstold - i'm a little cross at a tv programme refering to the genocide of native Americans as 'being run off their land'...)

Any pointers?

I know there is a thread about chastity and/or celibacy in the Temple. It is from a few years ago, maybe 2004-05. I can't seem to find it with a Google search, but I know I have seen it. Does someone else remember this?

This thread gave me an idea.

What if there were a forum called the Index, in which people could post topics with useful references to the topic's subject, specifically WITHIN Barbelith?

It is already possible to search the lith with google, and I've noticed mods and helpful fellow posters pointing newbs to past threads, but barbelith seems like a perfect tool for indexing itself. Posters would be able to give some context to the particular references. It would map the subjects discussed here in a different way.

It might be possible to show the parallel development of threads of throught over time, as well, something what Barbelith represents poorly in its current form. Coming to the board some six years after the inception of its current form, there is a tendency on my part to read everything as if it were posted a moment before I arrived at the first post. Cross posting gives some clues, but it occurs to me that each poster must have their own story of Barbelith and history of reading and posting.

Just a thought.

That happens on the wiki somewhat.

The wiki is pretty neat - I read a bit of it before applying, and the PKD reference in particular is quite good. I'm still excited to have found a forum with 6 years of compelling, A+ posting, even though its a bit like reading an entire encyclopedia, printed on a single page, with a high powered microscope.

However, I'm curious as to how other newish users approach Barbelith, as a text, since there aren't really any maps here and you can begin and end wherever you like. To go along with the thread topic, can anyone point me to a discussion like that on the board?

Anyone know what's happened to last year's Big Brother thread? The search function shows it up, but it's vanished.

No idea stoats

Does anyone know the thread in which grant, I think, posted or linked to a story where there was a contract worth a huge amount of money and it fell on its arse because of a misplaced comma or bad punctuation or somesuch. My web-fu is just not any good.

Apologies if it seems like I've appeared from nowhere to spam the policy, I'll stop now.

Is the big brother thread this one?

That's weird- that's the one I was looking for, but not the one the search function found me, which was blank.

Ah well, doesn't matter. I have the one I wanted now! Thank you.

Thanks.

Don't think there was one. The show's only a few episodes in, right? With FTV&T as quiet as it's been of late, such a thread probably wouldn't have even dropped off the front page...

I could have sworn.....
Perhaps it was somewhere else (?) Well, if so I might start one.
Thanks Jack.
