Planet X

Ok we know that the upcoming story in New X-Men 146-150 is called "Planet X" and focus' on Jean Grey. Early hints by Morrison was that it is to be an "ambitious and cataclysmic" story about "Jean Grey and the Phoenix".

Of course Planet X might refer to mutant baby booms or the planet becoming more accepting or intolerant of mutants due to Xavier's branching ideologies....

And we can also speculate about Phoenix disinfecting the planet, Xorn's possible secret intentions, Esmes partner in crime, or Jean's and Quentins words from the future.....

But since there have been some wonderfully crazy discussions on this board about underlying themes and spirituality behind Morrison's work and the concepts he uses in his stories....

I wonder if there can be any clues to what "Planet X" is about by discussing how astronomers and present day alien/UFO cults view "Planet X". Could Morrison be drawing inspiration from these myths?

Planet X refers to a possible planet beyond Pluto. Some astronomers believe there is such a planet or mass out there.

The interesting part of course comes from the alien cult people.

They believe that Planet X is Nibiru ("planet of the crossing").

According to texts by a group of ancient Babylonians called the Sumerians, these people knew of 12 clesestrial bodies in our galaxy- the sun, moon, and 10 planets. Of course today we know of 9 planets.

They recorded that they gained this knowledge from their gods. The sumerian civilization dates back before biblical times. Biblical stories like genesis and the flood were influenced by sumerian and zoroastrian cultures/religions.

Nibiru is suppose to be the home of these gods.

Supposedly Nibiru passes through our solar system every 3, 600 years.

There are different beliefs about Planet X/Nibiru among different Alien/ufo cult groups.

Some believe that Planet X will come close and bypass Earth sometime during 2003 and cause destruction.

Others believe that the "gods" that the Sumerians wrote about are really aliens that inhabit Planet X/Nibiru and that they are our true ancestors...

"This planet is inhabited by the Anunnaki (the Nefilim/giants in the Bible), "Those Who From Heaven To Earth Came". They landed on Earth, colonized it, mining the Earth for gold and other minerals, establishing a spaceport in what today is the Iraq-Iran area, and lived in a kind of idealistic society as a small colony. They returned when Earth was more populated and genetically interfered in our indigenous DNA to create a slave-race to work their mines, farms, and other enterprises in Sumeria, which was the so-called Cradle of Civilization in out-dated pre-1980s school history texts. They created Man, Homo Sapiens, through genetic manipulation with themselves and ape man Homo Erectus."

Though there is also a Spiritual interpretation to "Nibiru" and perhaps this might pertain more to Jean Grey/Phoenix...

"Nibiru is a metaphoric trigger for awakening to a higher consciousness that something is about to occur - but it is a shift in consciousness not the return of a plant. The 'X' = As is Above So is Below - Emerald Tablets of Thoth. It is the merge of matter and antimatter. It is the merge of the polar apsects of your soul at which time you become One."

Just some wierd food for thought. Anybody have any speculations about Planet X and Jean's role?

It could be a chain of mutant-themed fast food restaurants.

Bio, I'm very glad you posted this thread, because I've been hearing and reading a lot about Planet X and was going to post a thread about it myself soon. I'm sure Morrison is aware of all the talk about the supposed real-life Planet X and that must be connected somehow to his story, if in inspiration alone.

I think I remember once section of Alan Moore's brilliant opus PROMETHEA that talked about the "Lost Sphere", and connected this lost sphere to the asteroid belt between Saturn and Jupiter (not sure if these are exactly the right planets); that there used to be a planet there but now it's destroyed, much like this remnant of a section on the Tree of Life. At first I thought this might be Planet X but now I realize it's something different.

>> establishing a spaceport in what today is the Iraq-Iran area,

Very interesting that you also note this, because I read one lengthy article in an alien/UFO/conspiracy journal recently that theorized that one of the main, REAL reasons for the war in Iraq was for the U.S. to secure a 'stargate' or time/dimensional travel mechanism & technology that was in the heart of Baghdad. The article stated that this was, in some way, connected to the famous Philadelphia Experiment.

I think the metaphoric/spiritual meaning of Planet X is something we can almost guarantee being a part of Grant's Phoenix story.

Okay, that Baghdad stargate idea sounds a bit like wild fanfic to me. Truth is stranger than fiction, so I wait in anticipation for MacGuyver to emerge with parasitic "gods" in tow .

The broken planet that relates to Da'ath, the number pi, and the asteroid belt is between Mars and Jupiter, separating the gas giants from the inner four solid planets. Pluto don't count cuz it's weird.

I have no idea what Jeanix is going to do in Planet X. But it may have something to do with Earth X, Universe X and Paradise X, where she figures as a slightly significant character, in both the Jean Grey and Phoenix forms. That epic has a lot to do with the nature of perception and mutation and language and holonic scale inter-relationships -I wouldn't doubt that Grant may use this to further explain Jean's real relationship with the Phoenxi entity -maybe explain where "She" goes when the Phoenix is talking.

Yeah its wierd.

Hopefully we will get some kind of clue about Planet X when they release Septembers solicitations.

I think they said at a comics con that Morrison was going to introduce a new arch enemy later this year. They also alluded that the X-Men might be in more colorful costumes at the end of the year. I wonder if these things will occur in Planet X.

If Morrison really is drawing on the Planet X cult might he bring in the cellestials? Though given the themes developed throughout his run Planet X more likely refers to mutants inheriting the earth. I wonder whether there'll be a scene mirroing the massacre of neathandertal man in E is for Extinction?

Given the plethora of telepaths in the book I can't help thinking this new arch-villain must be an Omega-level telepath. Will this pit telepaths against the rest of mutantkind?

And as we know the next arc is set in the future and features a sentinel is it possible that we'll get Morrison's take/twist on the Phoenix followed by his Day's of Future past?

Or maybe it's just about how there are more and more mutants being born and how soon the whole world will be like Planet X-Men, and the school finding new ways to adapt to a rapidly expanding mutant populace. Or maybe it's about Phoenix disinfect earth and making it a mutant utopia - "Planet X." Or maybe it's about a villain who wants to remake the world into his/her Planet X.

Maybe it's all three.

Well I'd say a combination of at least two of the abose. But the sentinel in the future doesn't suggest a mutant utopia does it?

We know the arc focuses on the Phoenix but it presumably picks up on Quentin's comments about the school encompassing the world (vague recollection) at the end of the Riot story.

Doesn't that Planet X rubbish also involve the poles switching due to the gravitational forces exerted by the arrival of Planet X in the solar system. Wonder if Morison has drawn on this to give Xorn a cataclysmic role this arc?

Well, it certainly suggests an unhappy ending. But the sentinel in the future doesn't mean its from a future that will definitely happen.

Maybe it's Nimrod!

Didn't the comic con reports also say that Morrison would be dealing with the next stage in evolution. I think that may be for next year though.

Some people think that Jean might loose her Phoenix power at the end of Planet X but I don't think so. Xavier said that Jean was undergoing a radical psychic transformation into the Phoenix, basically.

Would Morrison have her loose her power before the transformation is complete or right after the transformation completes?

If the Phoenix is just a temporary stage she seems likely to only become more powerful in her own right - Morrison did say he wanted to see what would happen if Jean became a goddess.

Supposedly the latest issue of Wizard Magazine says that there are a lot of clues in the "Murder at the Mansion" arc about what the story in "Planet X" will be.

You know, the wild speculation about Planet X being the mysterious real-life planet is sort of like guessing that E Is For Extinction was a story about dinosaurs, isn't it?

FinderWolf
14:33 / 19.06.03
Well, not really, Flux, considering there's a famous conspiracy theory thing about a mystery planet called Planet X that's very well-known in such circles and that's what he's titling the story, plus we all Grant M. loves that conspiracy stuff. And there was no speculation about E for Extinction being about dinosaurs that I ever read. (Your analogy would only work if there was a famous scientific or conspiracy theory called "The E Extinction" theory)

P.S. I would seriously LOVE to see Nimrod back also, Flux!! He was very cool, cool-looking, and was totally underused by Claremont once he introduced him. Plus, imagine what Grant M. could do with Nimrod -- the possibilities boggle the mind (or my mind, at least)!!!

I keep thinking Grant's going to go all Rhea with Phoenix, and have Jean bugger off to explore the supercontext, or some such business. It would make sense. She's the one character that you really can get rid of. Once she's been booted up to godhood, well, where else can she go?
