Decided to immerse myself into the world of Daniel Clowes

sheesh, first Alan Moore, now Dan Clowes, who next?

Well, I believe it was Flux who recommended Clowes to me, so recently I bought some of his stuff (see how easy it is to get me to spend my money?!?!) Anyways, imagine my surprise when I find out that Clowes was the creator of Ghost World, a comic I've been meaning to read for some time now (not to mention watching the film). Well, "Ghost World" was great, I loved Enid, I wish I had a friend like her in real life. I haven't seen the film yet but I got the DVD recently so I hope to sometime next week.

I also got a book of Clowes called "Twentieth Century Eightball", and I just have to say I fell in love with this one, so much so that I'm trying to get the back issues of Eightball (so far I've managed to find 6, including #1, but I know where I can get some more cheap). This book was really great, very funny. I like Clowes style a lot, I love artists that draw ugly characters so well, but let's face it ugly characters imo are funner to draw (not to mention easier to draw then attractive people!) After reading so many comics about gods and 5D entities and superheroes and what not it's interesting to read something like this more small scale, almost realistic (well, except for things like the bugfucking stuff, but that doesn't seem too odd to me).

"Art School Confidential" was hilarious, makes me laugh everytime, I know so many people like that, including myself, Clowes could probably do a great strip mocking me."I Hate You Deeply" was one of the best pieces though, I dislike most of the types of people he mentions. Great stuff.

I don't really have much to offer by way of Clowes information but I do want to note that I'm going through a very similar shift. I've been reading stuff like Hopeless Savages and Blue Monday and La Perdida recently and I'm finding that I'm really enjoying these smaller, more realistic stories a lot. I'll keep an eye on this thread cause I may look into Daniel Clowes soon.

Well, if you do look into Clowes, by all means get "Twentieth Century Eightball". His vision does seem to be intensly personal.

If you're looking for more realistic stuff, don't pick up LIKE A VELVET GLOVE CAST IN IRON.

Well, Yes, pick it up, obviously. But don't expect many similarities to GHOST WORLD. It's bizarre, dreamlike, and to use a term I truly hate, "Lynchian." Whatever that means.

CARICATURE may be more what you're looking for. Short stories about sad, isolated people who you would normally avoid sitting next to in the lunchroom or on the bus.

Personally, I enjoy his pre-EIGHTBALL Lloyd Llewellyn stuff. Crazy ziptone beatnik private eye jazz filled with aliens, commies, and other pop debris. Clowes himself would be the first to admit it's rough and slightly juvenile compared to his more recent work, but maybe that's why I like it.
