Ok, is it totally impossible to self produce a comic series? Do you need to learn loads of stuff?

Anyone experienced trying to create one?

No its not impossible, depending how commited you are to doing the work - various people on barbelith have produced their own comics both in print and on the web- check out the jenny everywhere threads in the creation for a small sample of some of the output.

No & Yes in that order. Learning lots of stuff is involved usually, how much exactly depends a lot on what you already know, but it’s not necessarily an obstacle unless one is to lazy to do the work.…
So…. what do you know? Can’t give you a really informed answer with out that info…Do you draw? Write? Can you show us a little of what you can do? From that I might be able to help a bit.

Oh, and to your last question, yes.

Cool! Yes, if you haven't already you should defiantly check out Jenny Everywhere, great stuff. That’s an excellent example of web published work (I take it that someone is also printing these?) and the idea of an OPEN SOURCE COMIC BOOK CHARACTER is fascinating…

Something to take note of Chris, you didn’t say if your thinking about print or web but having been publishing zines for over …ack, almost 20 years now…and working in both the north American indy/underground scene and for major US publishers, I’d highly suggest web publishing to start. Good low stress/risk environment on the publishing side, should be focusing first on the actual nuts and bolts of the medium itself. How to draw and tell a story and all that.

Once you’ve refined your art &/or story ideas and discovered you direction visa vie genre and readership you’ll be in much better position to tackle the potentially nightmarish world of large print runs. Till then you can collect the best of your web-based work from time to time in small run hand made books, exploring silkscreen printing and binding. Much more fun and potentially an interesting craft in of itself. Once you’ve had some experience with all that and have learned how to market your work, taking on a medium to large print run at a professional press and managing distribution will be a lot less daunting or difficult.
