A radio producer/reporter friend of mine sent me the following question:

hey - do you know anyone whose life and computer
has been infected with
spyware???

If so, maybe you could get on the National Public Radio. Lemme know.

Try ad-aware. It works for me. Discovered 60-something pieces of spyware, mostly "Trackers" (tracking my internet usage, usually for the purposes of advertising... potential consumer profiling, as it were). There were 2 other pieces that weren't trackers, something called Red Sherriff (looked it up once, but can't remember. Well-documented through google, though); and some other piece of spyware.

Kazaa or similar fileshares will install pieces of tracking spyware for (presumably) ad-profiling purposes. Something like ad-aware will detect them, and if you choose, remove them; This will cause your filesharing prog. to cease functioning. Get Kazaa Lite instead.

Spybot Search and Destroy picked up a lot of stuff that ad-aware seemed to miss. Including a load of pr0n dialers that my little brother managed to install all over the place..
