Having a quiet day with traffic down on the Underground, I've been reacquainting myself with some of the articles on the Webzine and, do you know, there's some really good stuff on there.

I hope some of the newbies who have found their way to the board have taken advantage of this rich store of fantastic writing (hint - the piece on Division X is mine!).

Also made me wonder - what's the current status of it? There hasn't been anything added to the Webzine for quite a while. Is this lack of interest among 'Lithers or lack of time on Tom/Cal's part?

Were there any plans to redesign the front-of-house bits of Barbelith?

Just wondered.

I thought there was someone who wasn't Tom/Cal editing it, was it Nick, Sleaze? I was wondering if, due to the fact that it hasn't/isn't being updated much at the moment whether www.barbelith.com should point directly to the Underground as that's the most vital area of the place.

I've been talking to Cal about this, and about how it might be getting close to the time where we reorganise the site a bit so that the underground is right at the front of the site and the rest is relegated to internal status. I'm not comfortable doing it until we've done the next big push in community self-management - which should be coming in the next few weeks (I know I say that a lot) - and which initially, I suspect, is going to really piss off a large number of people on the board.

Basically we're trying to move to a model which will make it easy for the people within a community to decide what kind of community it is. Gradually, and eventually, we're trying to find ways to extend the reach of the kind of distributed moderation we're using to other areas - and the first one of those will be identity maintenance on the board.

So anyway - it's going to have major bugs and flaws in it initially and we'll have to work around that until we're at a state where we think it's ready for the general public. Then we'll move everything around and I'll probably do a bit of a online community blitz to try and drag the community back into the limelight. I've very very intentionally kept the site a little hidden over the last year or so while we checked that everything we'd done so far was sustainable, and because it's more important to have a small functioning quality community than a malfunctioning massive one...

Tom, you're making me really nervous. Why will it piss people off?

Because substantial change always does, I think!

Cat- I'm sure it'll piss us off in a good way. Or we'll love it when we get used to it, and wonder how we ever did without it/coped with the extra stuff we used to have. (Personally, I'll probably be pissed off but keep quiet about it until everyone's got used to whatever it is, and then say I always thought that was a good idea.)
You've got me intrigued. Bring it on!

And back on the topic- Tom, if the webzine's still a going concern, how do I submit stuff to you? What's an optimum length, etc. All that malarkey.

A while back (quite a while back) I offered to take over some of the chores on the webzine to ease the burden on Tom somewhat- and unfortunately life stuff happened and i have totally failed to even keep up a regularly publishing stories. There is a webzine editorial group which i think can still be reached at this email address submissions@barbelith.com

If someone else wants to take over from Rob, then they should feel free to talk to him about it. I'll trust his judgment. But the zine will eventually be moved from the front page of the site, so it would be unlikely to get as much traffic even than it does now.
