Excellent Movies (which ain't all that)

Too much time, take it away !!!

People and opinion-makers (otherwise known as critics) will tell you that something ain't all that, and sometimes - sometimes - you find pearls in the place where everyone has painted a swine and mud consisting of shit.

Example: Alien: Resurrection. Now, post-Amelie, it may not have the same air of filthy shit, as your granny and her dog made it to be in 1997 -- but I thought I was the only one back then ...

Recent example: Dreamcatcher.

Having never read the book, I could nonetheless surmise that this was pure King, filtered through Goldman & Kasdan's minds (+ hundreds of other people), and it struck me that this was the most faithful adaptation ever. Carrie, the Shining and Misery may have cinematic moments of greatness, one could argue, if not great movies by themselves -- as is Kubrick's case, but faithful adaptations, they are not. The moviemakers' (& editors') hands are too idiosyncratic, and deviating too much from the source material to be called faithful. Never the less, all the King trademarks where there in Dreamcatcher, and I felt completely enthralled by how Kasdan had realised it. This was perfect, this was r-e-e-e-e-ally good entertainment, with excellent acting by everyone involved -- Jason Lee, even. Surprise.

So, post-cinematic experience, I began to talk around, and strangely, most didn't particularly care for it -- but I will defend it, always!

What's your cinematic highlight, most will think of as unbelievable puke on your ass and balls?

I also liked Alien: Resurrection. A movie I really dug (though I'll draw the line at calling it a good movie) was The Ninth Gate, Roman Polanski's adaptation of The Club Dumas. I dunno why, but it reminded me of Indiana Jones (not so much the films, but the computer games).

The '80's Flash Gordon is one of my favourite all-time movies. Sumptious colours, big ass soundtracks, and killer-chicks in metal bikinis just do it for me.

Flash is a star quarterback for the New York Jets. On Mongo Flash shows off his football skills, enchants the Emporer's daughter, fights for his life, and frees the Planet Mongo from its evil ruler Ming..

Not sure that I'm happy with the idea that a faithful adaptation necessarily makes for a successful adaptation - we're talking about two completely different mediums here after all. That said, I did rather enjoy Dreamcatcher if only for the Shitweasel and mad old Morgan Freeman. If they'd played it all for laughs I'd have enjoyed it even more.

Dreamcatcher was fun only because it was so bad.

I really enjoyed Contact. I think it nailed everything science fiction is suppose to be about; a sense of wonder about how things work.

Are we talking about adaptations, or just about movies we like that everyone else hates? Because I think Joe vs. The Volcano is an enduring and subtle work inlaid with pure comedy gold.

JOE: I'll take the whole set.
LUGGAGE SALESMAN: May you live for a thousand years.

Also, 2000 Miles to Graceland is the best superhero movie made as of this writing.
