Does anyone know anything about monasteries or other sorts of places that you can fuck off to for six months and, like, think lots? Picturesque mountaintop location and large modern library are definitely bonus features. Ideally without any religious commitment involved...

A retreat? All the ones I can think of are religious, unfortunately, but there must be some secular ones out there. Or work in a youth hostel, I suppose...

There is a community in Scotland called The Findhorn Foundation, which considers itself spiritual but tries not to place any restriction upon what that means. (I don't have their web address to hand, but google should find it pretty quickly)

It isn't a solitary go off into the wilds kind of thing, but I look at it whistfully and keep promising that I will go up and play with them at some point in my life.

I know of two zen Buddhist monasteries, one's in Northumberland and one's in Reading. Can't get hold of the link right now, but if you google for Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey it will take you to their home page...they offer weekend retreats and for longer periods of time, so long as you're willing to do some menial chores like gardening and stuff...and as long as you're willing to take part in the meditation sessions.

Yes! Menial tasks definitely a Good Thing. Just to clarify - don't mind if the places are religious, just don't want to have to join the religion in order to stay there...

Would second Angels comments on the Findy Foundy (http://www.findhorn.org/) I imagine staying there would be quite cool, we used to go visit when we were teens, some very interesting characters and very close the the River Findhorn and a stunning beach...

I was at Findhorn for a couple of days years ago. It's a beautiful place, but bloody cold you're staying in a tent, even in summer! i have memories of wandering round in the middle of the night, thinking I was going to freeze to death (and actually considering knocking on caravan doors at 3am to ask if they had a spare blanket), and then coming across their 'love shop' - swap your old clothes for other people's old stuff. I gathered up a huge woolly jumper and three coats and went back to my tent and buried myself under them all.

Anyway, back on topic! It's cool, but a bit new agey - lots of talk of angels (it was set up by two women who spoke to angels when down on their luck, and were guided in what to do) and dancing round the cabbages to get them to grow. Which they do - it's very fertile and beautiful. I think they ask that you get involved in either gardening or kitchen work but other than that you can do what you want.

There are stunning buildings, great eco houses made out of big (beer? whisky?) barrels, and the beach is just gorgeous.

Just remember your woolly pyjamas if you go.

Or try the Quakers - I know there are several Quaker retreats in Britain and, though I'm not sure whether you're meant to identify as Quaker to go to them, no-one can police it in any case as you don't have to believe anything specific to be a Quaker. Is top religion.

Samye-Ling buddhist centre's worth a look too - it's in the Scottish borders. It's quite a shock to see this stunning temple in the middle of Scotland. I haven't been for, god, maybe 10 years ánd it was still being built last time I was there but it was already fabulous. I *think* you can stay there on a personal retreat, as opposed to a specifically buddhist one.

And not too far from Findhorn is Pluscarden Abbey which is also very nice (and very old), I think it would be much more chilled if that's what your looking for -
