Seeing as how I know next to nothing about things magickal can someone please help me out?

What is the significance of swords, cups, pentacles, and wands? Are they know by anything as a group? Do they have an elemental correlation? What are they used for in practicing magick? Any help would be great as I'd like to add a sense of realism to an rpg I'm about to be playing in.

Thanks for the help.

I just started playing Mage: The Ascension. Oddly enough I wasn't interested in playing until I read the thread on here.

Dude, ask me anything
In Mage you use foci for magick, and the ritual Sword/Wand/Cup/Coin is a classic magickal tool. Especially good if you're playing an Order of Hermes character. They are of course the four Tarot suits and since Mage is based heavily on Tarot they are v.appropriate.

*rubs hands* I'll be glad to help. In Mage:tA, it helps to know a little about as many magical paradigms as you can get your hands on. I'm running a game myself just now. What's your character like? We can talk to you about your magical paradigm so you don't end up like the fellow in the example from the other thread, who didn't understand that you can't just do things, you have to have an idea how they fit in with your magical system and symbology. What tradition/other affiliation is your character?

Thanks for all the help. I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around this paradigm thing, but I think I'll get it.
