Angry Lith versus loved-up Lith.

Oh.

I went away and everyone loved each other in the I heart Lith thread and all...I come back and everyone's on a fuck 'em all tick, and everyone's ARGUIIIING. *Hides underneath the table weeping.*

But seriously. Is it the time of the month? Is it something in the Lith water? Is this the beginning of the May Warning? Is it (in the words of Armistead Maupin) 'Maybe The Moon'? And do these things go in cycles?

This interests me.

These things do indeed go in cycles. Personally, I'm somewhere between love and hate.

It's weird... I feel more comfortable here when it's all lovey, but I find it more compelling when it's all hatey.

But hey... Angry Lith is like Angry Christ... it means well, it's just in a mood where it can't be arsed to be polite.

Don't worry. As I said, it is cyclical.

Does "arguing" = "angry"?

Olulabelle
21:46 / 05.05.03
Err.. ok, substitute angry for shouty...

Olulabelle
21:49 / 05.05.03
Stoatie, why is it cyclical?

Can't be arsed to be polite is fine by me, *I* feel like that too. But I'm interested in the reasons why...

folks have always hated folks.

they were just not talking to them.

i just got told i am consistently full of shit, which suggests underlying tension or dislike that was going unnoticed. i dont mind, by the way, if flyboy is wondering. i am sure he and i disagree on many things, and i am sure i will some day make that one post that will make him love me.

i think what you are seeing is not a change in our love or our hate levels, but a synchronous coming to the fore. this will probably stick around until the energy of the conflict/argument/discursive essay posting dissipates.

ps

saddle up scathers, for tomorrow we hunt hugglers!

I don't think there is a "why". Or, if there is, I haven't been able, or arsed, to discern it. It just seems that there is a cyclical thang going on. Maybe it's seasonal?
Or maybe it's just that when someone gets arsey, everyone else piles into the fight? I know I tend to. And when people are being really nice to each other, it kinda sets a theme?
I don't know. But you've now got me wondering about it. If Barbelith=community is a microcosm of society, then do the same natural laws apply in meatspace as apply here?
Fuck. I'm doing my own head in now.
I'm gonna think about this one, then post again.

tomorrow we hunt hugglers!

The thing about a huggler is ze's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When ze comes at ya, ze doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til ze huggles ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. Your cheeks turn red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those hugglers come in and...
they huggle you to pieces.

ah well, so anyone see X2?

Dude, if you're being harrassed by PM, tell a moderator.

Actually, the "Mundaning the Freaks" thread and the "Those Wacky Japanese" threads are showing a pretty standard example of how Barbelith gets shouty.

A: I have just had a great idea/Look at those people. Why are they so weird/wrong?

B: I don't think that is a great idea/ I don't think they are weird/wrong.

A: I'm going to wet myself until you apologise.

It's the short version, but it's a pretty standard flare-up type.

Otherwise, well - we had the whole Leaptopia thing, which was argument-tastic and fairly flamey, and Andrew showed signs of losing it again...these are the kind of things that probably increase tension on Barbelith. But the lovely thing is that there are always things that fall out of the massive increases or shifts in scope and focus that happen when people fight, that present things in a totally different light.

And the best part is the huggling and schnoogling afterwards. Oh yes.

yeah haus, that is a pretty standard formula for argument

and its not harrasment, its an occasional "UR A d1c|<" in pm, i can dig it.

yeah, i TRY not to create topics that fall into the formula, but i always post either at work, so i type quickly and dont think much, or its late at night, and, well the same.

do arguments and spats really upset anyone here?

i mean, we are all aware that the computer cannot harm you unless you wire yourself up to it, right? or maybe if it fell on you...

but seriously, is it that bad when there are shouty bits?
they go away usually, and most of the time there is no lasting enmity. hell, sometimes they even help you make friends.

me, i'm cyber stalking myself just now because no one else shouts as loudly at me.

SHOUT AT ME, YOU INBRED NONCES!

whew.

Olulabelle
23:03 / 05.05.03
NO, NO, NO, TOKSIK YOU INBRED NONCE (is that shouty enough? Phew, I feel fab now...)

I'm not upset about it, hence the tongue-in-cheek comment about hiding under the table. I guess it was a flippant way of introducing a more serious subject to do with the behavioural cycles which Lith seems to really, really follow...

i do worry that some folks go away after a posting frenzy about to cry, though. it certainly seems like it from some of the posts you read.

i would like to state that i never think of this place badly when i am away, and i never cry. well, hardly ever.

I know when I first read the "what is this site all about anyway?" page, it sounded like you can count on both being argued with and not. Which sounded good to me, which is why I am here. To some extent, you don't have to read the angry threads/posts if you don't want to, just like you don't have to look at whatever kind of porn you don't want to.

I think the cyclical bit is really interesting though. Just kind of "events" in particular always seem to cluster together...surely you've all had the experience where nothing interesting seems to happen for months and then all of a sudden you realize that the month of May (or whatever) is totally crammed full of stuff and you have to pick and choose. Everything goes in cycles? Probably a mundane explanation for this like "posting angry tends to encourage angry posts", but I like to think of it like matter attracting matter...if you have a space-time graph but with probability instead of space plotted against time, everything clusters together like matter forming accretion disks......events have their own "gravity"? Or just standard homowhatsis, stasis that's it. homeostasis where a system keeps itself in line with negative feedback, like expansion/contraction in a star. is there some negative feedback on Barbelith? like, the more angry posts occur in a short time, the more powerful a force toward a reverse trend occurs over time?

I don't want to argue with anybody. I love everyone.

Except that guy over there. He smells of spam. I hate him, in much the same way as Vanessa Feltz hates the person who murdered her.

Pants, that event gravity idea is sweet, I'm stealing it right now...

I like the shouting and debate and overreaction, keeps the place lively. If it was only huggles I'd get bored.

So basically, the answer is that we have angry periods en masse, because emotions feed emotions?

I would hazard a guess that it's got more to do with American Imperialists who take "pride" in a certain (estimated) 200,000 civilian deaths in WW2 and/or racists who think that sexual perversion and oppression of women were invented and subsequently monopolised by the Yellow Peril. If I could be bothered, I'd get involved, but I've already criticised US imperialism (with predictable results) and anyway the lefties round here are just as psychotic in their own way (witness Elija's harrassment).

It's just... Barbelith.
