Madonna on the Kabbalah - Actually Interesting...

From her recent big-deal interview, wherein she uses a chaos-magick type analogy and evokes GM's comments in THE INVISIBLES about 'having the cheat codes to the universe.' Interesting.... she sounds sincere about it.

------------------------------------------------------------------

MADONNA’S SPIRITUAL SIDE

Like everything she does, Madonna is relentless about maintaining her own good karma. She practices yoga, keeps a macrobiotic diet, and is a devoted student of Kabbalah, a mystical form of Judaism, which predates organized religion. Madonna says it has turned her life around.
Lauer: “You called it very punk rock.”
Madonna: “Yeah.”
Matt: “I don’t know what you mean by that. Why is that?”
Madonna: “Because to me punk rock is thinking outside of the box, outside of the program, outside the establishment. And that’s what it is.”
Lauer: “You said one time it’s like getting the codes to the universe.”
Madonna: “It is the code to the universe. Isn’t it amazing that there are laws of the universe that you can actually find out about, live your life according to and change the world for the better? Isn’t that amazing?”
Lauer: “So if I said to you what is your religion...?”
Madonna: “I don’t have a religion because I don’t like that word religion.”
Lauer: “You used to have a religion.”
Madonna: “What was it, I was raised a Catholic. But that was something that was imposed on me by my family.”
Lauer: “So if someone asked you, you would say I have no religion, I’m spiritual.”
Madonna: “I’m a Kabbalah.”
Madonna regularly attends classes at the Kabbalah Center in Los Angeles, as do husband Guy Ritchie and six-year-old daughter Lourdes.
Madonna: “My daughter goes to a spirituality class every Sunday where she learns about sharing and giving and the power of her words. And it’s changed her immensely. And my husband is very interested in it because he’s always been a very scientific person and was a total Darwinist when I met him. Wasn’t interested in God, the Bible, or any of those things, but because it’s so rooted in science, it’s something that he’s been able to take on board.”

Madonna has been studying Kabbalah for seven years and it is so important to her, that it is her teacher Rabbi Eitan Yardeni and not Mr. Ritchie whom she wanted us to interview.

Lauer: “So, you understand that you occupy a very important place in her life.”
Rabbi Yardeni: “Absolutely, me and my teachings, absolutely.”
So what was it like when the rabbi met the Material Girl?
Lauer: “In walks Madonna.”
Madonna: “I was pregnant at the time, too. I was six months pregnant.”
Lauer: “Okay, so in walks a pregnant Madonna. So what was your image of Madonna before you actually sat down and met her?”
Yardeni: “Honestly, I didn’t know much about her.”
Lauer: “You knew who she was?”
Yardeni: “Of course I knew who she was. But I didn’t know much about her. I knew she was a rebel and that’s the reason I knew Kabbalah can be very powerful for her.”
Lauer: “I think it’s very obvious to see a change in her, certainly it’s easy to hear a change in her. What changes have you seen in Madonna?”
Yardeni: “Less judgmental, more tolerant, less ego, more humility, more compassion, less reactive, being able to see the bigger picture versus just reacting to pain and difficulty on a regular basis.”
Lauer: “We’ve all been to school. We know that some people are better students than others at any subject. So what percentage of people get this?”
Yardeni: “There’s some people who get just one percent of Kabbalah which improves their life one percent. And it’s all about how much effort you put into it. And not many people get it. Kabbalah is to everybody according to their level and their capacity.”
Lauer: “Where does Madonna fall in there?”
Madonna: “I so knew you were going to ask that question.”
Lauer: “Why not?”
Yardeni: “I can tell you that with no shame, Madonna is under the category of one percent of the people that get this.”

She may be punk rock, but she's American punk rock, so she's giving 110%. Maybe she saw "[Pi]." If her last video but one, with the NKVD/North Koreans in it, is any guide, she wants super powers. In that case, she should try Scientology. It'll give her power over Matter, Energy, Space & Time, for roughly $300,000. Pocket change.

There are indeed cheat codes to the universe, as anyone who's cracked a book on differential calculus or game theory (or has studied the darker arts of sociology) can tell you. There may be other codes beyond that, where I suppose Kabbalah and chaos magic come in. I don't have any opinion on those but, like most mystical disciplines, Kabbalah seems to involve a lot of study. What it doesn't have are gurus you pay to tell you how fabulously spiritual you are. Rabbi Yardeni sounds like a court alchemist who got a live one, or more than one, according to a Google search.

Celebrities, especially successful ones, discover spirituality because a planet full of people showering money and praise on them isn't enough. Traditional religion fails; how can you sit in the pews after commanding a stage? "Spirituality" lets celebrities have it both ways--the favor of the gods and a seat at their table.

The article raises an interesting question, though: does mysticism really precede religion, or does it come afterwards, in the after-hours discussions among the priests or in the private thoughts of independents exploring their religion's possibilities?

Secondly, is there any hope Lilith will steal her kids and send them to be raised by someone less fatuous?

Hmmm. Her approach sounds a bit too transcendentalist for my liking, and this Rabbi Yardeni, with his percentage games, sounds a bit...suspect. Why would you tell someone, in the presence of your student, that said student was in the top one percent? Wouldn't that - especially with someone like La Madonna - be extremely bad for her in terms of making her more egotistical? And how do you measure something like Kabbalistic study in percentage terms anyway? Does he have like a grading system? Is he saying Madonna's an Ipsissimus?

And if so, do we really believe that? I mean come on...In all seriousness, are you telling me that in a magick battle, Madonna could kick Alan Moore's arse?

I've got a bit carried away with the rhetorical questions but, hmmm.. I dunno. Maybe good maybe bad. More exposure for magick, anyway, even if it is dusty old kaballah instead of Shiny Pop Chaos. Hmmm.

Truth-Take it as you will...

Madonna, believe it or not,was chosen to be an icon (re:symbol) of what I am not going to go into at the moment. She was contacted by, for lack of the better term, Goddess - this was the basis of her song "Beautiful Stranger". After her meeting, she took it upon herself to take what she had been taught further by learning the Kabbalah - to fufil her purpose. (In the Neo Arcana deck for the new aeon, the Star is a picture of Madonna...)This produced "Ray of Light"(The Album)

Sing with Tzaddi:Sepher in the sky-y-y-y I wonder...

Madonna fucked up though. She was shown a wee bit of Magic in the form of her "contact" dissolving into the forms of the ravens, as she reproduced in the video "Frozen"...so much for knowing, willing, daring and keeping silent,eh?

And then Maddy was cut off. This explains much when you look at the way things have gone since.

Is "Ray of Light" helpful for getting into a magickal mode/mood? Is it also fun to listen to?

If I were to use any Madonna song it'd be Cherish. Or A Perfect Teenhood.

I happened to see a book on Qabalah in Waterstones which had gushing endorsement from Madonna and Guy Ritchie plastered all over the cover. Most of what I found inside was fairly vacuous New Age-lite for the self-help crowd. Fine if it floats their boat, not for me. Can't remember the title or the author, though.

Actually, you are right on both counts. It was also perceived as insulting to her "contact" to see her act f power displayed through special effects for entertainment/self promotion purposes. Maddy blew her chance to be one of the great spiritual leaders of the new aeon as well as one of the first women to not only be made privy to the Kabalistic teaching (Oral Teachings) but also to understad the truth of it. Imagine if she had stuck to this path as opposed to what she does best: Exploitation

PS: Each track on "Ray of Light" is a Kabalistic working. I believe there is a thread kicking around the Barb about it.

Kutcher Becomes Latest Kabbalah Recruit

Hollywood hunk Ashton Kutcher has become the latest celebrity to embrace the Kabbalah, thanks to his fledging romance with actress Demi Moore. Following in the footsteps of Madonna, Roseanne Barr and his ex- girlfriend Brittany Murphy, Just Married star Kutcher has started to show great interest in the mystical offshoot of Judaism. Kutcher, 25, and 41-year-old Moore were spotted shopping at the Hollywood Kabbalah Centre on August 20, where they emerged with a $78 Kabbalah poster. Each Hebrew symbol on the poster represents one of the 72 names of God. Each, according to devotees, offers a "connection between the infinite spiritual current that flows through the world". By meditating on the symbols, one can "gain access to the same forces that the great Kabbalist used for overcoming the chaos of life and the negative aspects of human nature".

Who says "Exploitation" is a Bad Thing? Sure, it makes those on the "inside" feel violated, but basically it evens out the playing field and makes sure Everyone (in AND out) knows about it. The ONLY thing that matters now is the health of Pop Culture anyway. Ashton and Demi and Maddy ought to hold a Tiphereth Party at the next winter solstice or something.

I didn't get into Kabbalah because of Madonna, but I think there may have been people who did and were turned off because it didn't appeal to them at-that-time. Who's to say they won't find themselves at one time or another rediscovering it?

And I picked up the Ray of Light album recently becuase I was craving that ninja dancy hit "Nothing Really Matters". Anyway, I started listening to the track and heard the Kabbalah teachings in the lyrics. I went back and listened to the whole thing. It felt very strange to know that I had been infiltrated in the past and didn't know it. It felt good though.

Good luck to her.

It sounds like she's trying to learn something, and share what she's learned.

For every celeb. that became buddist there were probably 10000 people who looked into it, and 10 who discovered it was the path for them.

And she's prettier than Alan Moore..

Was it "Power of Kabbalah" by Yehuda Berg? I picked that up at the local Kabbalah Centre during a seminar. New-Age Ultra Lite. Blech. I read it while I'm on the john.

(threadrot) And what's up with the Kabbalah Centre folks anyway? The seminar I attended felt like a cult recruitment drive. The only saving grace was the presenter sounded oddly like Billy Crystal. "Let me tell you dahlings, and you know who you are, the Tree...is...mahvelous." I've got a sneaking suspicion their membership will be found in pantsuits and matching Nikes with silk scarves covering their faces and cyanide in their systems any day now. Anyone else been to one of these Centres? (threadrot ends NOW)

You say Barbelith, I (currently, not in some earlier incarnation when 'things were better'), say wank-fest.

If [Madona Louise Veronica Liccone] wishes to share hir own personal experiences with something that has shaped my own spiritual life, than so be it. Since I believe that Magick manifests whether an individual is 'magickal' or not, I support anyone, whether celebrity or person, who espouses something I support.

Rule #1 of media:: Don't ever call Madonna washed-up. People who do always end up looking like jerks.

Also, teaching kids about "giving, sharing and the power of words" sounds like a much better kinda of sunday morning spirtual education than the soppy and dimwitted twenty something girl telling you about joshua and the flood and other bible stories without being able to answer any questions.

Speaking of whom, here´s what Alan Moore has to say on the subject (quoted from Arthur Magazine # 4):

Q: "Well, there´s quite a bit of Kabbalah/self-help books out there these days. You´ve got Madonna using the Tree of Live in her concert tour logo...

A: "I should imagine if there´s a swamp of books out, it would pobably because somebody thought, Or,
It´s probably like that. I should see what´s left when the dust settles. This is probably just a Western world flash in the pan. Give it another six months and everybody will be into primal scream therapy. Or dowsing."

Kiss My Apocalips

Strange. Something has been swallowed by the Abyssos. So here´s Mr.Moore´s answer again:

A: "I should imagine if there´s a swamp of books out, it would probably because somebody thought, "Hmm, Kabbalah: Madonna mentioned it. It must be hip. I´ve got this recipe book kicking around, I wonder if I was to re-jig it and call it THE KABALLISTIC RECIPE BOOK." Or, "I´ve got this self-help idea, if I were to re-group it to the various Sephirot, then maybe I could sell it."
It´s probably like that. (...)"

Under the heading of "the thread that, suprisingly, would not die..."

Madonna is coming out with a children's book. One of the two children in the story is named Binah. Binah's mother died when she was 5 (like Madonna).

Kabbalic influence eh?

Celebrities, especially successful ones, discover spirituality because a planet full of people showering money and praise on them isn't enough.

Of course it's not enough. It certainly wouldn't be enough for me, and once the novelty wore off, it probably wouldn't be enough for you either. I found spirituality partly because I looked at my life one day and realized that I had everything everyone ever told me I needed to be happy, but was not happy anyway. I decided to look in a different direction. Good for Madonna if she's found something more substantial than money and fame.

Traditional religion fails; how can you sit in the pews after commanding a stage?

Let's not even get into the definition of "traditional religion". The more important point is that it's unfair to assume that it's hubris that keeps her out of the pews. Maybe she's realized, as many of us have, that organized religion isn't what we need. Or, like me, she's got a bony ass and those goddam wooden benches hurt to sit on for extended periods of time.

"Spirituality" lets celebrities have it both ways--the favor of the gods and a seat at their table.

This doesn't make much sense to me. Could you elaborate?

As for Madonna v.s. Alan Moore...I don't think Madonna would be any kind of pushover. Don't forget: when Madonna speaks, people all over the world can hear her. She's got the reach.

Yardeni: “I can tell you that with no shame, Madonna is under the category of one percent of the people that get this.”

I've been thinking about this. So she's one of a hundred people who walked into a Kabalah class and got something out of it. That's really not high praise. I mean, we're all here in the magick forum because we were one of a hundred people who read Liber Null, The Way of the Shaman, A Practical Guide to Qabalistic Symbolism or whatever and got something out of it (one out of a hundred isn't that great. My friend's brother met his wife online, and she turned out to be an international lawyer/model from Kazikstan. A model who's also a successful international lawyer? That's not even one in a million. That's, like, one in ten million).
