Lovecraft : The Comic

Just saw this linked via Penny Arcade, someone doing a comic adaptation of something Lovecraftian. It looks fucking brilliant.

Look Here.

Captures the feel of what Lovecraft I've read wonderfully.

That is the greatest thing I've read since...ever*.
The art is really neat, too.

* - It should be noted that "ever" is just a lazy way of saying "recently".

Hm. Page being arsey for me. No can see.

I bought a Lovecraftian thing at a recent comic-con I went to, actually; Dunwich. Worth a look. Some of the writing's a bit dodge, but the author does point out in places online that it's his first piece of writing for comics.

Only got time to read the first few pages at the moment.. comments -

the art puts me off a little - too Image Comics trendy..

and the concept of HPL as a handsome, daring hero is a little .. odd. I would have thought the most interesting thing about placing him in such a role would be the fact that he'd be completely un-charismatic, un-handsome, weak and rather creepy..

I love the psychedelic way it's all set out though - pretty darn effective, I'll read the rest some time soon.

Which reminds me: anyone else pick up #2 of 'The Courtyard'? It's pretty damn good, greatly improves on the first one, and what's more it's a complete fucking no-holds-barred Cthulhu-a-go-go.. so to speak..

Great. Now I'm picturing Cthulhu in a bar, pole-dancing.

i always thought the point with cthulu stuff was that it was all about the stuff at the edges that was barely described but hinted at - isn't a cthulu comic or film for that matter just entirely miss the point

Yes, basically.

That's the attitude i'd take for any serious Lovecraftian creation, although i wouldn't say that visual adaptions of Lovecraft automatically miss the point - I mean i'm sure we can all think of examples of 'less is more' horror movies that are all the more effective for just hinting / not showing etc.

But if people want to break out the monster rage and nutty bad trip visuals occasionally, i don't see anything wrong with that..

Actually, The Courtyard does a pretty good job of exploring the abstract/inexpressible aspects of the mythos whilst still featuring plenty of aforementioned monster-rage. Basically Alan Moore's short story provides the former, the team doing the adaption throw in the latter.

Lovecraft: the quick version. Kinda fits, no?

I must have missed the Man Of Action side of Howard Phillips in the complete stories & biography on my shelf. Hes more of a whiny wimp wingeing on about the unspeakable eldrich horrors on the otherside on the unknown...
The art is good attractive & dynamic, but yeah a bit too clean, you need to aim somewhere in between this & the common very detailed but stilted horror comic look. Like John Coulthart.
A note for other modem users, its a 1m flash file so it takes a while to load.

On Lovecraftian things, a got a mp3 of Neil Gaiman reading his
Peter Cook & Dudley Moore do HPL story "Shoggoth's Old Peculiar" which is fun & you should check it out if its still up on this site or floating around.

I to thought lovecraft as a man of action was a bit odd, but remember it was his dream, we all dream our selves how we would like to be, his randy carter was an adventurer, and many have commented it was how he would have liked to have been, hadn't he been so sickly.

Carter wasn't much of an adventurer either - hears one sinister voice in an ancient crypt and he runs a mile and goes fucking mental.. what a wuss..
