I don't think a shaman is anything like a magician, they both use magic(k), but they are not alike. A shaman is a healer, a magician is an explorer. A shaman may explore, and a magician may heal, but the shamans "function" is to heal, a magicians "function" is to explore. A shaman also usually has a community to look after, isn't really a shaman without people to look after, a magician is a loner for the most part. A mystic may not use magick at all, a magician may be a mystic, but a mystic is not a magician. Jalaludin Rumi was not a magician, or maybe he was, seeking a mystic experiance may be an act of magick, but most mystics don't really use the siddhis for anything else. So a mystic might use magick, but not for it's own sake.

Rumi was a mystic, which for me is purer than magic for a purpose- he saw the wondrous splendour of the world and described it, but didn't use it.
Agreed about the shaman serving a community, but magicians don't have to be loners, or selfish, or interested in magic for it's own sake. I can see where you're coming from, but magicians delight in being exceptions to every rule. Let's just use whatever description seems right at the time

What about chaos magic(k)ians?

Even more the Magic(k)ian than the Hermetic If magick is physics, then Hermetics are Newtonian while Chaotes more Quantum. Just a new look at the same old beast, really.

The interview was interesting, though hardly groundbreakingly informative. It does give some insight in to his writing process, which is helpful. What I'd really like to see though, is a similar interview of him before his death, after his ideas had time to gel and evolve into something more formative through 10 books worth.
