I've always thought that someday in the future, the little colored plastic iPod will make an interesting hat.

Tchoh. You guys are so behind. Got an account, tested it, worked out how to convert from "protected format" AACs to MP3. Bored now.

The new iPods only come out on Friday though, and I've reached my gadget quota this week after buying a Nokia 3650.

fridgevelvet is the 3650 any good? I think I might get one as I found someone doing a "special offer" on them.

So far, yes, it seems pretty good... I'm at work and people have been asking them to take their photos, which tend to end up a bit blurry but that's more from my palsied shaking hands.

It's bigger than I thought it would be but not too big. The screen is nice and crisp, it charges quite fast, and the Bluetooth is useful, though I still can't use it as a Palm modem cos the bastards haven't produced drivers yet.

I'm getting a USB Bluetooth adaptor for my iBook so's I can check how well that all connects.

No obvious flaws so far, basically, though I can't find a keypad lock anywhere. If you can get a cheap one and you've got the cash I'd go for it.

I think you can actually... It technically is a firewire interfaced hard drive in there so you can store more than music. Heard that during a photo shoot for a client, that the photographer was doing this for backup of images on-the-fly.

Okay, so I ordered a 30 gig iPod just now. I blame the government, for sending me a cheque of money that was actually mine anyway in the first place. At least I'll be able to curse them while listening to my entire fricking music collection whenever I want.

What scares me about this mobile tech is that I'm such a good mugging target now. Any aspiring street thieves - it's easy to identify an iPod user, the headphones and unit are distinctive, and you could get a few hundred easy.

What really scares me is that I'm turning into the poster boy for Wired.

Techno-gadget-geekery aside, is there really any NEED for a 30GB iPod? The new design is nice, but I've got the 5GB model, I have over 700 songs on it (more than I could ever possibly listen to in a single sitting), and I've still got disk space to spare. If I ever do fill it up I can just go in and delete the stuff I rarely listen to.

Well, I know people who have considerably more than 30 gigs of music around. I don't, but if I ripped every CD I own I might have.

It eliminates that awkward "what CD shall I take to work/the party/on holiday" moment... okay, not a big problem really. You can also use them as handy firewire external drives to steal software from demo machines in stores and other people's Macs.

The major reason I got the 30 gig rather than a smaller one was that I don't really know what I might want to store on it. And I've just got this gadget-buying instinct - always get the top of the line, no matter what, cos the lower the specs the faster it will become obsolete.

I've got the 10. It's full, and I'd love more space. I keep it set on random, drawing from the enitre song library - it's like having a radio station that doesn't suck. I nab odd or just new discs from people occasionally, and then I even get to have songs I don't know come up. S'great.

An Atari controller that plugs right into your TV (and plays ten different games).

I'm holding out for the Intellivision version.
