Just finished "The Road to McCarthy" by Pete McCarthy and really enjoyed it. The only other travel book I've read was "McCarthy's Bar" by him too.

Both are laugh-out-loud funny and give you the sense of the places he's visited. True from his point of view but there are elements he gives you of the places that help you make your mind up and, possibly want to go there too.

So are there anymore travel books you could recommend to me (and the rest of us)?

I enjoyed Five Hundred Mile Walkies by Mark Wallington and One Man and His Bog by Barry Pilton. They're both quite likely to appeal to anyone who likes the Pete McCarthy books.

I've just completed Hokkaido Highway Blues: Hitchhiking Japan, by Will Ferguson -- a slightly jaded, vaguely cynical, self-deprecatingly funny account of a Canadian, Japanese-speaking (a bit), former English teacher's effort to be the first person to hitchhike the length of Japan. His ruminations traverse Japanese culture as he cadges rides from the southern cape to the northern-most point of the country.

I'm a bit hesitant about posting this because I'm absolutely positive I'll be shouted down, but I really like Bill Bryson's books.

*hides.*

I mean I know they're a bit 'Bill Bryson thinks' all the way through, but you do get a good sense for the weird little odd eccentricities of the countries he's written about.

Sorry.
