Thoughts on a SoCal Barbe-meeting?

i don't recall seeing one of these recently, so i thought i would correct that.

is anyone interested in meeting somewhere in Southern California (probably LA) for dinner or something?

any thoughts on venue or time?

any weekday evenings work for me with a little advance notice. some weekends are good, some are less good.

Yup. You're alone in all of California, everyone else is zombie fodder.

I'd be happy to join in but I'm not really a regular poster. Perhaps it could be centered around an event of some sort?

diz
14:39 / 25.06.03
that sounds like a plan. what sort of event should we be looking for? movies? music? art thingie? astrological convergence?

Missing You - attendance at a barbe-meet is not governed by how much or how little you post. Which is a good thing from my point of view as sometimes I either don't have the time, or just plain don't have a lot to say.

The only requirement I have found is for a person to have the desire to meet other people from the board in person. Simple as that!

Angel, thank you very much. I know some people are rather private and prefer to meet only those with whom they already have a connection. I appreciate the welcome just the same.

I have a suggestion, not sure how interested you folks might be. There's a reading at the Hammer Museum on Tuesday, July 8 at 7pm with Dennis Cooper and Christopher Russell:

I'm pretty sure it's free, though parking may cost a few dollars. Not a terribly festive thing, but drinks after perhaps?

You know, I've always found it rather peculiar that there aren't many Barbelith posters from California. You'd think that there would be quite a few, but not really.

I wonder what it is about Barbelith that seems to attract a lot of East Coast/Midwest folks but very few West Coast people...

Alternatively, Guy Maddin's Dracula is playing at the Nuart. Yakitori and a movie?

How about this. I'll be at Meltdown Comics for the promo event for the film of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" this Saturday. I'll wear a nametag that says 'FRED' (since I don't look like a Fred) and you can avoid me if I seem repulsive or frightening.

Meltdown is hosting a panel of guests, who plan to speak and sign autographs. Tony Curran (Rodney Skinner, Gentlemen Thief), Peta Wilson (Mina Harker), producer Don Murphy, producer Trevor Albert, screenwriter James Robinson, and Kevin O'Neill are scheduled to appear.

They will be giving out posters, T-shirts, and tickets for a special promo screening of League. The screening is for those who attend the event only, and tickets will be available at the store. Kevin O'Neill has had a special original drawing printed, that he will sign.

"League Day" takes place at Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd. (between LaBrea & Fairfax), on Saturday, July 5th, between 1 and 4 pm.

1- i'm moving this weekend, so it's a little sketchy for me.

2- i had no idea that Peta Wilson was playing Mina. i had such a thing for her when she was on La Femme Nikita

totally sorry i missed this one also. how long is it there for?

Crap. Tomorrow's the last night for Dracula. I can't miss it, and will try to catch the 7:30 show.

Dracula was silly, pretty, I'd say whimsical except I hate that word. I wish it had been a little more brave, a little more willing to risk sentimentality. Still it was quite innocent, which is a lovely thing.

Eek! I have heard from a Reputable Source that Dennis Cooper will be reading new and divergent material. Very exciting.

I don't want to exaggerate my own importance but did I actually manage to kill this thread? I can shut up about the movies and readings and whatnot and just drink beer, you know. You've only got to say as much:

WE WANT BEER
DAMN YOUR EFFETE GATHERING SUGGESTIONS
DAMN THEM TO HELL

sorry, i just moved (still in SoCal) and had my online access disrupted and so i fell off the face of the earth as far as events go.

i would love to meet for drinks or something, but i'm still trying to figure shit out.

hey there are 2 interesting events in LA coming up.
any fellow so-cal barbeliths who would want to connect?

Joseph Matheney ( from incunabula fame) will hold a lecture at the bodhi tree this coming sunday (8/17)

saturday the weekend after radio alchymy is hosting the next installment of the "catalyst conference" with some conspiracy & alien related speakers. went last month, which was pretty cool.

I'm in Orange County, but in a month Im moving to the midwest in Cincinnati, which proves the point of the earlier poster. What is radio alchymy or where? I'd go, and my job has coincedentally been giving me Saturdays off.

Radio Alchymy is a pretty cool radio show on KPFK 90.7FM in the greater Los Angeles area.
it's on from 2-4am wed night ( or is this thu early morning? you decide...)

they are interviewing everybody from illuminati experts to raelians to to other spiritual & magick related people.

unfortunately they dont have an archive of their previous shows, but I've been recording good segments and intend to post them on my own website soon.
i think the next catalyst conference is in north hollywood, they are a bit unorganized, and the website doesnt give an address yet.

i will post the details here as soon as I have em!

one of the scheduled speakers has first hand info on alien implants, that should be interesting.

90.7 is the channel that plays Tom Lycos and Howard Stern, right? Neither of whom I listen to but I should have known about this before, I wish I knew about it yesterday. Now I must wait a wait a week. Radio Alchymy has an interesting website, albeit small. I'm totally into that scene, remember a few months ago when Jordan Maxwell had a radio show that only lasted a few weeks? Did you hear a while ago when David Icke was on Coast to Coast? I am really looking forward to this Radion Alchymy thing.

they neither have tom lycos nor howard stern on 90.7.... maybe its different down in Orange county?
its mostly talk radio, and some ecclectic music show.
great spiritual/political hip hop friday nights, "divine forces radio". the only music show in LA I ever listen to!
no i didnt hear icke on coast 2coast, how was it?

raelianautopsy
15:36 / 15.08.03
oops, I was thinking of 97.1 Now that I think about it I may of heard of 90.7 but its hard to get in deep Orange County.

The great David Icke was good on the radio, more new age than conspiracy but still good. He said something in particular that stuck with me, "The world isn't just a little bit not like we thought it was, its NOTHING like we thought it was."

h3r -'some eclectic music show'

Are you referring to Demolisten?

h3r
20:28 / 15.08.03
i actually meant " some ecclectic music showS". plural.
i'm not familiar with demolisten.
they have a daily show called "cosmic barrio", a reggae show on sundays, the previosuly mentioned genius hip hop show DFR on fridays, a folk show sometime, etc. all over the place, and all of it is good.
i sound like a spokesperson for the staion! they dont pay me , just in case you're wondering

so nobody coming to the Matheny lecture sun/2pm bodhi tree ?
i'll be there.

Perhaps the Southern Californians have too little in common to warrant a gathering?

Tonight at 5:30 there's a Reisling tasting at Opaline for only $10. I won't wait underwater.

h3r
20:21 / 19.08.03
i assume "reisling" is a wine?
excuse my ignorance, I dont drink .

more ignorance: where / what is "opaline"?

i am still determined to drag at least one fellow barbelith to the catalyst conference on saturday...

HCE
23:27 / 19.08.03
Hello! A sign of life! Yes, Reisling is wine, and Opaline is a rather fine restaurant in the rough center of Los Angeles proper, perhaps ten minutes North of the Los Angeles County Museum.

well I'm tied up tonight, will have to check the joint out some other time.
do keep us posted on wine tastings and other activities.

btw, that Joseph Matheny lecture on sunday was very intriguing. you all missed out.

still nobody confirmed for catalyst conf on sat.....

I am not responsible for the copywriting, but thought I'd pass on the information. It's just up the road from me so I might well go:

"Fancy an art rave? The Los Angeles County Museum of Art extends its goodwill to the LA arts community (and everyone else) in a big way with an event that won't be repeated anytime soon. To end its great summer season with a commemorative bang, the museum is throwing an all-ages all-nighter filled with bonuses — festivities include live music (courtesy the Conga Room), cocktails, free film screenings, and gratis admission to the French Masterworks and Modigliani & the Artists of Montparnasse exhibitions — all continuing into the wee hours of the morning. It's worth a long hang, as hourly prizes include things like annual memberships. So eat, drink, and enjoy a happening that truly supports art for art's sake.

when: Thur 9.18 (9pm-7am)

where: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (5905 Wilshire Blvd, 323.857.6000) "

price: FREE!!
