The Abolition of Work

Anyone seen thisarticlebefore?

quote:
. For certain purposes it's not too misleading to call our system democracy or capitalism or - better still - industrialism, but its real names are factory fascism and office oligarchy. Anybody who says these people are "free" is lying or stupid. You are what you do. If you do boring, stupid, monotonous work, chances are you'll end up boring, stupid and monotonous. Work is a much better explanation for the creeping cretinization all around us than even such significant moronizing mechanisms as television and education. People who are regimented all their lives, handed off to work from school and bracketed by the family in the beginning and the nursing home at the end, are habituated to hierarchy and psychologically enslaved. Their aptitude for autonomy is so atrophied that their fear of freedom is among their few rationally grounded phobias. Their obedience training at work carries over into the families they start, thus reproducing the system in more ways than one, and into politics, culture and everything else. Once you drain the vitality from people at work, they'll likely submit to hierarchy and expertise in everything. They're used to it.

Bob Black, champion raver, apparently really obnoxious in person. Loompanics stopped carrying his books after he got in a huge battle with another Loompanics author, ex-tabloid-writer Jim Hogshire. Former co-workers describe Hogshire in less than flattering terms, but he seemed to have met his match in Black.
Anyway, personas aside, the rants are definitely worth thinking about.

Where IS the 20 hour work week?

An excellent, excellent, anti-work ethic resource is here:

It's also quite funny in places too, as well as being insightful.

I should be in work right now but FUCK 'EM, ha ha ha ha. Guess what? I ain't going in. I ain't going to feel guilty about it, either. If you aren't afraid of them, and they have hardly anything you want, then their direct power over you is feeble ... but then my resistance is not exactly iron-clad ..

I'm a lowly temp, I can take the time off I like and all that malarkey (I do get away with murder in my time keeping etc) but unfortunatley I need Money far too much at the moment.....

i have a fairly menial job, it's 'worthy' to a certain extent cos it's in a trade union, but it's usually tedious. i went job-share: cut my working week to 3 days so i could spend more time writing and doing stuff i wanted to do. i feel emotionally, physically etc miles better for it, tho of course the downside is that i'm pretty poor, but it's worth it. i got my life back.
