And it took me about 15 minutes to even remember that I was thinking
in my stupor that this would be a good idea, as a thread, but I have
gotten here now so bear with me...
Whatever did people do before the advent of the internet when they
were all too stoned to be sensible and it was the end of the night and
everyone was home safe and sound and happy and one was too wasted to
go to sleep and so stayed up needing to share with someone how
completely stupidly smacked up they were with smoke and drink and
whatnot? What did people do?
Do we take the internet for granted, just assuming there will always
now be odd message-board-y type places to go and tell someone and it
won't wake anyone up and it won't be a disturbance... should we all
appreciate the mod cons of mod con life more, or should I just refrain
from drinking, smoking and posting ?

If someone just puts an end to this silly post I will not really be
offended.

I kind of missed out on the whole phone "chat lines" thing. But before that... fuck, I don't know.

Well, we did stupid stuff. For example I woke up at 6pm and this morning about 4am, i got bored, went to food lion, bought some nair, and got rid of most of my body hair.

Do you think the old stereotype of drunk ex-s phoning people at 4am is gone now that we can just drunkenly post and email at 4am? That's sort of sad. More people really should be out on the street at 4am waking up their friends.

Ah, Baz, do you forget Stoke Newington so quickly? Everyone is out on the street waking their friends up at 4am!

How synchronicely that I look up this thread a few minutes after sending a stoned e-mail to an ex

Actually, that was exactly what I was thinking of. It would be a shame if your friends discovered Barbelith at 4am instead of stopping by your flat...

i love the pure honesty of this topic abstract.

personally, pre-internet, there was a lot more tv involved. cos you can only read so much, esp. when it's late and/or yr iniebriated

what IS it, though, about getting drunk that makes you want to call yr ex? i mean seriously.

Come to think of it, i dont think i WAS drinking before i got online. See: its corrupted me! Or perhaps its coz that was when i was about 12... yeah lets blame the internet.
As for the "calling ur ex" thing, ooh how i cringe. Imagine being the most drunk uv ever been, calling ur ex, and then random soldiers who uv never met take ur fone and start telling him that theyre about to fuck me. *shudder* Especially when a few months later i got back with the boyfriend. So i'd say the internet: GOOD THING!

about drunkenly calling an ex or several, i admit to still doing it just to see if i am still desirable. they ask when and where to meet and i just hang up and get back in bed with my current lover. :P sad lil' droog, am i.

There used to be late night TV programmes especially designed for 'jusht gorin from the pub, whersht toast' people and early hours of the morning ones for 'man I need to chill out, my ears are ringing' wasted clubbers. I mean they used to show re-runs of The Magic Roundabout at 4.30am and who the hell under the age of 5 is up that early?

It was all for us, I tell ya.

She types, pissedly.

Before the electronic age we all used to play educational board games or gather around the piano in the living room and sing along to popular tunes of the day. Friends and neighbours were in and out of each other's houses all the time and there was a real sense of community. It was total shite. I could kiss that Tim Berners-Lee.

I still get drunken 4 AM phone calls from my ex-es. And from my future ex-es as well. They say that I sound funny when they wake me up and call to giggle.

Anyone who calls me at 4am is definitely aiming to be an ex-something.

I think I was thinking of the old "gather round the piano" days.
Imagine being some lone pioneer person, wasted and without a
phone/tv/internet and the nearest neighbour is 10 miles and 2 days on
horseback. I suppose this has a lot to do with inspired literature
from the good ole daze. I never phone up ex's- but only because they
are mostly all dead.

2 saturdays in a row i called someone who i suppose you could call an ex. problem is i called her at 3 am, my time, and she lives on the east coast. She was very polite about it, and when i didnt call her the third week she said she was expecting the call, and almost called me to make sure i was ok.

i remember when my best interactions with people, where i felt smart and all that, were in person, now i come to barbelith with my ups and downs. my RL friends are primarily there so i remember to eat and so i have someone to beat at billiards...

Ok, minus the not-having-internet etc, thats pretty much me.

Don't be too scared my dear gingerbob, come over to my web someday and
I will tell you all about it...
Just joking of course. I think its all to do with a run of
coincidental bad luck and I don't think I did anything to them. I do
however, think one should keep a sense of humour about these things.

right on. i have often thought that a large reason that people came up w/things like geometry is that they were not distracted at all by video games, internet, tv, radio, magazines, etc. etc. ad nauseum.
of course i do realize that yes we would have to have geometry first in order to get to a place where we could have those things. but i think you know what i mean.

Spooky, I was talking about this yesterday, stumbling in to the house at 5am and watching the show for (what felt like) hours! I had a friend who swore by the Teletubbies but I was always a Magic Roundabout girl.
