Jeffrey Archer gets four years.

My biggest laugh of last year was when Lord Archer was forced to withdraw from the race for Mayor of London.

However the maximum sentence available was life imprisonment. I'd like to know what kind of level of barefaced lying and perjory would necessitate that tariff-

It was for perjury? I thought it was for crimes against literature

Let's hope he serves all four years - Not a Day more, Not a Day Less.
Ah well, he'll be First Among Equals in jail.

Seriously though, I haven't danced around my radio to the news for quite a while - it's almost as good as when Portillo lost his seat in the '97 election.

Let's just hope he doesn't write a book about it when he gets out, eh?

Ah, hahahahahah!!!

I haven't laughed so hard since that documentary on the suicide rate amongst Lloyd's Names. Damn, I wish I'd videotaped that...

The fact that he gets to keep his seat in the Lords just goes to show how outmoded and outdated that institution really is, and should, hopefully, lead to some real reform.

Read The Guardian headlines too fast and thought he'd got life!

Archer got away with his lies for years-- his lies got the editor of the star sacked. That he got caught is little cause to celibrate when he blatently got away with it for so long.

Yeah, four years isn't much for the amount of bullshit that came out of the guy's mouth. No idea what his writing's like but I think I can safely assume it would make me ill.

Yes, believe me it'd make you ill. I still have nightmares about it now. In my foolish youth I read one of his books thinking 'oh he can't be that bad, look at how many he's published.'
[shakes head. Sighs.]
How wrong I was.

It's like some long running TV soap, where they bring together plot-threads that have been dangling for decades. Fuck it, it's like Babylon 5!

From SpinOnThis.com:

Jeffrey Archer has spoken about his first night in prison: "I had dinner at the Caprice with my secretary" he said.

And for some 'reality? where's that?' right-wing reactions to Archer being jailed, check out BBC Talking Point
Included are such evergreen classics as "Archer? He doesn't deserve it, he was only having a laugh after all!" and "why does he get 4 years when murderers and paedophiles are allowed to go around buggering children with their R.O.C.s and are actually helped by the police!".

quote:A damn clever chap who was a bit silly. But as usual anyone with a bit of charisma and flair and who is well bred and falls by the way side is preyed on by the petty left wing reporters who work in the media.

Gavin Sandeman, you go onto the list.

News just in- Archer is being investigated for fraud again 57 million pounds was raised by a charity he started for Kurdish refugees in 1991. Only 10 million reached the Red Cross. This man is such a barstard! And guess what the charity was called? "The Simple Truth Campaign"!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're not singing, you're not singing...

The government is planning to change the law on peerages for crooks, whether it'll be retroactive to get Archer I don't know. Looks like he's going to need more members of his family to die if he wants to get out of jail for a while in the forseable future.

I was reading the sun in my local takeaway (normally the only time I can be arsed reading it) and boy have they gone to town on his ass.

Complete purging of everything they couldn't print without being sued, the true story of how dodgy his dad was, a conman who worked his way round the UK and skipped off to the states during the start of WW1. Not an officer in the army as mr archer claimed.

Jeffery Archer now has no character left to impune, so the tabloids are having a field day as he cannot sue for defamation, that and the fact that he's probably skint.
