Although my respect for Powell plummetted during the run-up to the Iraq war, I have to give the man his propers for these remarks. Basically, Powell did what I cannot recall ANY sitting U.S. official doing before, which is criticize the U.S.'s role in the Allende coup.
As no reasonable person could doubt (and 'regret') the U.S.'s role in the coup, it hardly seems these comments should be commendable. However, there seems to be an official policy of admit no wrong-doing on behalf of the U.S., and for Powell to show even the slightest honesty regarding the U.S.'s role, is, well, mind-boggling.
The State Department, as an institution has distanced itself from Powell's remarks because of ongoing litigation involving the events. Is this story going to go away, or will Powell end up getting the axe for it.
Anyway, I hope this starts a trend of "truth and reconciliation" among administration officials, because after this Iraq mess, we're sure going to need it. |
