I'm with you on the "sympathy for separatists" there, Baz. Previously (on the solid_state show), my opinion on it was that "my Canada includes Quebec", and that it was ludicrous to consider otherwise. Nowadays... well, I'm wathcing the Ontario provincial govt bending over to the U.S. in every way possible, at the expense of it's own constituents. We're selling this province lock, stock and barrel at wholesale prices, and our implicit incumbent Federal leader seems to be of the same mind. The Quebecois are certainly more politically aware than the Ontarians (Ontarioids?)... and it's starting to seem like the separatists have better reason to secede than we'd like to give them credit for. It may be the only way to avoid becoming part of America.
On Charest, though, I know very little. I remember him from the Federal elections, what, 8 years ago? And I thought at the time that he would be a good leader, certainly the best choice if Chretien wasn't in the running. For the life of me though, I can't remember why. Damnned attention span. He seemed (and spoke)... idealistic, although, in hindsight, he probably would've been broken within two years.
Oh, and thanks for starting the thread, Keg. I've had this thought in the back of my head for months, and wanted to hear the opinion of a native Quebecois. |
