Weee! Quebec just had its provincial election and the Liberals won defeating the seperatist Party Quebecois. Which means that we wont be wasting our time and money on whether or not Quebec is going to seprate from the rest of Canada. We can now focus on better issues like health care.

Yeah, but politically I actually wanted the PQ to win. Damn lefties, I know. If Charest screws up horribly though, the PQ will be back in with a vengence... I was really suprised they did so well. 76/125 seats? Wow.

I was hoping the ADQ would do better, just for the sake of having a 3rd party in politics. Too bad the Bloc Pot didn't win a seat. Quebec Liberal governments can be a bitch too though, can't they? Weren't they the ones that came up with the infamous Bill 101?

Nope, It was the PQ that came up with Bill 101. I dont like the ADQ but you're right a choice besides the libs and seppies would be nice.

Well, good. Frigging separatists.

Though if the PQ had won, I'd be moving to Quebec. They offered to erase the student loans of anyone who had a child 5 years after graduating.

Liars.

I know. But a side of me is becoming more understanding towards seperatists, I don't know why. Exciting I guess. If they ever did seperate, I would be tempted to move there for the fun... then again, I'm tempted to move there right now anyways.

I was worried that if the Libs won, there would be a half-assed neoconservative job done on the province like Harris and Ontario, but I doubt Quebec would stand for it.

I'm with you on the "sympathy for separatists" there, Baz. Previously (on the solid_state show), my opinion on it was that "my Canada includes Quebec", and that it was ludicrous to consider otherwise. Nowadays... well, I'm wathcing the Ontario provincial govt bending over to the U.S. in every way possible, at the expense of it's own constituents. We're selling this province lock, stock and barrel at wholesale prices, and our implicit incumbent Federal leader seems to be of the same mind. The Quebecois are certainly more politically aware than the Ontarians (Ontarioids?)... and it's starting to seem like the separatists have better reason to secede than we'd like to give them credit for. It may be the only way to avoid becoming part of America.

On Charest, though, I know very little. I remember him from the Federal elections, what, 8 years ago? And I thought at the time that he would be a good leader, certainly the best choice if Chretien wasn't in the running. For the life of me though, I can't remember why. Damnned attention span. He seemed (and spoke)... idealistic, although, in hindsight, he probably would've been broken within two years.

Oh, and thanks for starting the thread, Keg. I've had this thought in the back of my head for months, and wanted to hear the opinion of a native Quebecois.

I've heard nothing but seperatist yapping since I was born. I live in a riding where there hasnt been a liberal govt. since before I was born (almost 29 yrs). I've heard them bitch and whine about being the poor dog kicked by canada. Im still hearing about how the referendum a few years back ruined anychance Quebec had of having an identity (all because of the ethinic vote). And I've heard "Fucking english! Go home!" more times than I care to recall. Many of the local english places (including Legions and religious institutions) have FLQ (our provicial terrorist organization) spraypainted on them.
Then last year the PQ had the delightfull idea of merging all the city into MEGACITIES!!! and did this whithout any regard as to what the populace wanted. (One of Jean Charest election issues was to demerge the cities). I get along great with most of the french people I know, I just sick and tired of constantly hearing from the moronic contigent of the seperatist movement.

The poor dog being kicked around by Canada? Bloody hell. Ottawa's been bending over backwards ever since Lester Pearson to offer concessions.

Kegboy: Sorry. I remember all that, and forgot. I guess I wasn't thinking of the actual record of the PQ government, and the nasty bits of seperatism (which seems to be personified by Parizeau).

[threadrot: Toronto went through all the bloody megacity crap back in 1997 too. The worst effect possibly having newspeople refer to 'our megacity' with a straight face...]

What does everyone think this will do for seperatism as a movement? Is Landry resigning?

He's considering retiring. From what I hear most of the usual naysaying pundits are rather hopeful about Charest.
