Minor astrology questions

ok so here we go

I've read a lot of web stuff but much of it seems contradictory, as is anything on the net. Barbelith has a good handle on a lot of the other mystical type stuff in the universe so i figured i would ask here.

Ok, im a scorpio, with capricorn rising. What does that mean?

I know all the stereotypical scorpio personality traits and all that, but what does the rising mean and how does it affect things?

Also, is it strange the im a scorp with cap rising and my mother is a cap with scorp rising, so like, opposite.

thanks
E

OK, I'm not an expert in this matter, but I think I got the basics.
The ascendent represents a minor influence on the general traits given by the (montly) sign. So in hte case of you and your mother, the inverse/coincident signs make you a little similar, not opposed. Hopefully someone else in here can expand these ideas.

Your sun sign is your "core" personality; what you essentially want in life and how you seek to get it; etc. Your rising sign is kind of your "outward appearance" sign; ie, how you appear to others when you meet them. Your moon sign also plays a part - it's the sign the moon was in when you were born, and it represents emotional aspects of your personality; ie what makes you feel "safe," what sort of things you do to relax.

Both Scorpio and Capricorn tend to be serious signs, and the immediate assumption is to think that you come across as a serious person when people first meet you. However there are some other things that come into play; i.e. the other positions of planets when you were born. Scorpio is a pretty strong sign so you probably are fairly "Scorpionic," however if you have a lot of planets in Saggitarius, or a lot of planets in Virgo you will act more like these signs.

If you've ever seen the astrological wheel, that also plays a factor. As I said, Scorpio is pretty intense and usually pretty serious, but if you have, say, Uranus in Capricorn at that time of your birth, it would end up in the first house of that chart (your rising sign), and would make you appear more rebellious and unpredictable (typical Uranian traits) than a Capricorn rising with Saturn in Capricorn (which would make you even more serious!)

It's all a little complicated. It's something I'm interested in so if you have any questions feel free to pm me.

As far as your mother being the opposite, that's not surprising at all to me. It's been my experience that there seem to be astrological patterns in families. For example, in astrology the sun (sign) is supposed to represent the father, and the moon (sign) is supposed to represent the mother. In my family, my father is a scorpio (ruled by mars) and my mother is a virgo (ruled by mercury). I am an Aries sun (also ruled by mars) and have a Gemini moon (also ruled by mercury).

It's interesting stuff, to me anyway. Hope I didn't confuse you more though!

i have also heard that yr moon sign is yr 'secret' self, also what you dream. an excellent example is that of my sister, a solid, down-to-earth, reserved capricorn, has always wanted, secretly, to be a dancer. she dances alone in her room a lot, and dreams often that she's dancing on stage. she has a leo moon. not that dancing is an exclusively leo trait, but it is flashy and, esp. on stage, dancers are the center of attention, which are leo traits.

Does anyone know a website where you can find out what your ascendent sign is? I know if I just do a search for astrology sites I'll get a million hits.

Try astroadvice.com, astrocenter.com or astrodienst.com, they're all pretty good.
