Soooo...........just watched a repeat of "The Adventure Game" on Challenge? TV on Sky Digital. It was a Crystal Maze-type programme set on a spaceship-thing that looked a lot like the TV-AM set.

Anyway, as the credits rolled by, what should we see drifting into view and then off into the stars only a HUGE RED SPOT! BARBELiTH, I tells ya! Grant Morrison didn't see it in a vision, he saw it on the BBC in 1981!!

Barbelith title:

And the bit at the end with Barbelith floating through space:

Ahh, 'The Adventure Game'... it was one of my favourite programmes ever. The Vortex, the Red Salamander of Zardil, 'dooG yreV'...

As the cello-chinned one once observed, it's all coming back to me now...

And wasn't there an Aspidistra? Or have I lost the plot?

And you had to say "Gronda Gronda Rangdo" to it.

Challenge TV is fucking mad.

We don't actually have it on our digital TV thingy, but just reading the programme descriptions is enough to freak me out.. it all sounds like shoddy grown-up versions of 'Knightmare'..

I used to love the adventure game too - even though it took me ages to realise that pretty much everything from currency (drogna) to common greetings (gronda gronda rangod) were anagrams of the word dragon.

yes indeedy talking aspidistras have be scarred onto my subconscious since early childhood...

I was a much bigger fan of Knightmare. However it's taken the repeats on Challenge TV for me to realise how hilariously incompetent the teams on it actually were.

Dungeoneer: Where am I?

Team member: OK, you're, um, in a room, it's got a, a blue floor, and, um, theres...

Tregard: No time for that, team! I sense we're in the lair of the giant spider Ghidgard, and he's always extremely angry. Best get the chalice and go to the door on the left!

(They do so)

Dungeoneer: Where am I?

Team member:Right, erm, you're, in a, a room, it's got a, a red floor, and, um, there's...

And so on.

Takeshi's Castle! a training centre for invisibles?

Or just an amazingly brilliant fun and all round lauagh of a game show.

Mad innit? Over here (engalnd) we get game shows were the jist is 'how many knives you can stick in someones back' over there they get to laugh at being shot at with lasers and dunked in water and run around like kids!

Not fair I tells ya'

I am puzzled by yr assertion that this is a shoddy, low-budget version of Knightmare, Riz, what with KNIGHTMARE being a shoddy, low-budget version of Knightmare...

I still remember the episode where someone died, the new team came on, someone said "Walk forward and open the door" and then they died and the next team came on.

That was excelent.

Note also: later series of Knightmare always seemed to get easier because they give you the fricking eye shield right from the getgo, unlike the poor series one lot who had to get through the sodding dungeon to get the damn thing.

It still turned out as hard, because kids don't get smarter the moment you give them a shield that can see. But you know. To me, as a very casual Knightmare watcher, it seemed pretty daft.

Rule #1 of "adventure tv": never underestimate the power of a bored tv producer with a bluescreen, a Quantel Paintbox, and some left over wigs.

Yes! Yes! Moira Stuart! It all comes flooding back. And can we just take a moment to step back and ponder over Lesley Judd...
