i am so... out of - bump
So I love Wilco's early stuff and only really like their newest stuff. Sonic experimentation is not my cup of joe, I'll admit. Their last two albums are dense and don't really reward the listener right away.
But I got the documentary and watched it this morning. Somebody in the flick describes things as having two potentials: artistic and commerical, and this doc is a very competent examination of the tension between the two, the tension between the band and the label, the tension in the band, tension between band and the fans. The pressure comes from all sides, it seems, and somehow, Tweedy et al managed to sail over the tumultuous seas of corporations and lawyers.
It's a difficult record for the band, and this doc describes perfectly why it's difficult and how.
The best part of the film had to be the now classic exchange between Tweedy and Bennet over "Heavy Metal Drummer" which climaxes into Tweedy vomiting. It was awkward and it was entertaining. I was identifying with Tweedy most of the time in respect to conflicts with Jay because he kept needling at Tweedy and never letting go. Oh well. What's done is done.
Tickets go on sale on Friday for a Wilco show in my hometown! Yay! |
