Decent free isp question...?

I've got a phone socket in my room now so I thought I'd take advantage of it.

So could anyone recommend a half decent free service provider (assuming such things still exist)?

Seeing as how many of you folks know yr. internet stuff and are unlikely to give me a bum steer, so to speak..*

*it strikes me that that should possibly go in the "things people think you say in your country" thread.. and note how I switch from American to English half way through the sentence - quite frightening..

The one I use is Tiscali, Riz. It's certainly not the fastest in the world and it sometimes takes two or three attempts to connect at peak times but it's free, gratis and for nothing.

I think the website is www.tiscali.com or .co.uk and you can sort it from there.

TIscali are hilarious! They've now ttaken to sending me letters informing me that no, really, this time they really are going to start billing me. For real.

They don't, tho.

I used Madasafish for a long time and they were really good. On their website they modestly claim to be the best free ISP in the world, ever!

Plus you get the added mildly amusing bonus of having an email address which reads: whoeveryouare@madasafish.com.

Thought I'd bump up this thread rather than starting another onbe for my annoyingly basic computer related problems..

Today's topic: free utility downloads.

I remember back in the old days it seemed like you could download piffling programs like Winzip, Realplayer, whatever the name of the thing you read .PDF files on etc. for free, but I've been going on a bit of a downloading binge today and my computer's fairly new so it doesn't have any of this stuff, and everytime I've hit the button to download one of these programs I've been taken to some corporate forntpage that wants me to pay for them.. what the hell is up with this? Please tell me I can still get these insignificant yet vital things for free...?

I know previously with Realplayer they tried to make you buy RealOne, and there was a titchy link which allowed you to download normal Realplayer for free. But I've just had a look and now it seems that you have to download RealOne on a 14 day risk free trial, then you cancel and you get the basic version for free.

I am Mac based however, so I get automatically taken to the Mac pages, I don't know if this applies to PC users.

I'm sorry I dont know anywhere free you can get these things, but you can get most of them if you buy a copy of PCZone(sorry if this counts as advertising). Usually they have a section of those sorts of things on their CD edition or especially on their DVD edition which are around £5 and £6 respectively. Hope this helps, Spec
