Leslie Cheung, singer and actor, fell to his death today from a hotel window in Hong Kong. He was 46.
For those need a precis, he played opposite Chow Yun Fat in John Woo's seminal gangster movie A Better Tomorrow (1986) (and both of the sequels), and again in the lighter-hearted Once A Thief (1991), as well as the lead in Stanley Kwan's Rouge (1987) but is best known internationally for his critically acclaimed work in Farewell, My Concubine (1993), as well as being one of Asia's most popular pop stars since his 1981 album The Wind Blows On.
Openly bisexual, he was notorious for pushing the envelope as far as gender in cinema and music was concerned. Known by his fans as 'Gor Gor' (Cantonese for 'elder brother'), he will be missed.
