Minimum laptop requirements

So I'm going to be spending the summer in Australia* with my beta-reader and I will probably have to do some (academic) work while I'm there: this means I need to take with me a tiny little computer which is capable of connecting to the Internet and opening Word documents, since people keep insisting on attaching these to me even though I ask them not to.

Apart from that, my only requirement is that I want to spend as little money as possible (the plane fare is going to be bad enough). Any of you antipodean lovelies got any advice, or things I should know (like, do they have the same kind of electricity in Australia or will my stalwart British-bought laptop cough and splutter and explode)?

*am based in the UK, for those as do not have a star chart showing Gauda Prime

sooo
you already have a laptop or no?

if yes, look into power conversion kits like us yanks need when we cross the puddle to your turf, that should be all you need

if no, go to Retrobox.com and look at what they have available. For mostly document work and internet i would suggest 128 mbs of ram with about a 5 gig HD min. Of course you also need a modem, but if the laptop you really like doesnt have one you can get em for like 20 bucks...

sorry for not making the above linky, i always mess it up...

It has to make you feel like you're in Neuromancer or The Matrix or performing some sort of action befitting a technologically well-equiped ne'ever-do-well. I see no reason for laptops to exist if they do not fulfil this function.

Mine personally amkes me feel like some sort of cool revolutionary cyberhacker terrorist criminal guy and is making me a very happy pixie indeed. Helping is keeping my mobile next to it.

That I am currently editing a psychology experiment into wether gender differences amongst formal operational children will have any effect on the time it takes them to complete a transitivity task is BESIDE THE POINT.

oh, and i would recommend win2k or linux, both work well with the minimal memory you can have on the laptops
