Good Goth!

I don't have enough goth in my life. I love the Cure, up to a certain time in their career, and with some exceptions. 'Show' was the first album I ever bought and it changed my life, truly. I liked Marilyn Manson for a while, and still think some of their stuff is quality, but they're a tad juvenile and grating now, and I really don't listen to 'em. Nine Inch Nails - used to listen to them all the time but my enthusiasm as paled, as it will. Dead Can Dance's (Goth? Allegedly) 'Towards the Within' is one of my favourite albums. Diamanda Galas, I love. I don't like Sisters of Mercy except for a couple of songs, nor do I like Fields of the Nephilim. And there my experience pretty much runs out. The horror.

I know uncle retrospective had a thread about songs for a mix tape, but I'm looking for recommendations of albums, new bands to try out, stuff like that. Stuff I might not have heard of (because I live a sheltered life, don't you know, just look at this mainstream selection), stuff I might have overlooked. Ya know. Please?

Ok, I'll give this a try.
Bauhaus Singles: 1979-1983, Volume 2 The black one. This is great, what Goth might be if Bowie had a lisp and a horror film problem.

Siouxsie & the Banshees: Once upon a time. Siouxse's first singles, kinda punky, all Goth and proves that Siouxse was one of the coolest women in music.

Swans: White light from the mouth of infinity. Michael Gira made some of the most harsh music in the world. White light finds him chilled out but hugely depressed. Tracks like "Better than you" "Power and Sacrifice" and "Love will save you" are just great. Even Jarobe isn't annoying on this album. Wow.

Miranda Sex Garden: Suspiria. Medieval babe Goth. Can be a little screamy but is quite moody and beautiful.

VAST. Some people love them, NINish with monks chanting. If you like Filter they may be your bag.

Black tape for a blue Girl: As One Aflame Laid Bare By Desire.
S&M concept album. So laid back it's almost ambient, this is a band who have listened to way too much of Dead can Dance's first album.

I'll add to this when I've had a refresher look at my CD's.

I second the Swans thing- although my personal faves from late-period stuff are "The Burning World" and "The Great Annihilator". Sort of between those and the full-on noise is the wonderful "Children Of God".

Bauhaus- yes, yes, a million times yes.

Virgin Prunes- "If I Die, I Die". Gavin and the lads go super-primitive mental. Genuinely good, and a lot less patchy than some other VP stuff.

Into A Circle- "Assassins". One of my favourite albums ever. Quite poppy and breezy, with a whole Burroughs/Hasheesheen schtick. And Rose McDowall.

More when I think of it (I'm tidying today, so I'm sure I'll find a bunch more).

Was going to mention the first Vast album, got it sitting right next to me actually - I like it and so does someone who works for Angel (as in the TV show) as another one of their songs popped up on the show again.

Not a big fan of Bauhaus - my favourite song of theirs is 'In the Flat Field'. But some of the other suggestions sound super-cool. Danke!

I think all that needs to be said is --

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY.

A band so terrifying that their official website's died and I can't find a decent picture of them anywhere on the internet, such is the horror that their very name generates.

The various weird recording projects of Lydia Lunch are also well worth looking into.

And why no mention of Joy Division so far?

Faith & the Muse. They're hard to find sometimes, and they're more mediaeval Celtic folklore goth if you can get the taste of that, but I quite like them. And I know they're technically electronica, and normally I don't like electronica, but I've become quite partial to VNV Nation lately.

Voltaire is musically-adept goth parody-- by musically-adept I mean he had a cellist and a violinist from a major symphony orchestra working with him at one point. It's also very entertaining. Because let's face it, Goth is funny.

And while this sentence makes all run in fear before it, I have a friend who is very talented, who will be small-scale recording soon... Cower, Brief Mortal! For I am pushy non-musical friend of a musician, whose talent I not-so-secretly envy! Fear the angst!

Christian Death are, of course, generally worth avoiding. There's a few of their tracks I love, and a whole bunch that I hate.
Apart from "Catastrophe Ballet". "Catastrophe Ballet"'s a good album. Very Bowie, in a "doomed romantic/pretentious git" kind of way. Good, really.

Switchblade symphony is good from time to time

Morphine, peter murphys deal after bauhaus, put out some good stuff, a little jazzy, kinda city goth i suppose

Wolfsheim, not so much goth but kind of synthpop cure ish

if your looking more industrial you can check out The Strand, good music by cool people.

There's an italian group called "Novembre". Don't know if it's strictly 'Goth', but they're worth listening to. I've got two of their albums, "Classica", and "Novembrine Waltz". Both pretty hard, good for getting lost in.
If it's Bowie you want though, he did a great track with Nine Inch Nails, called "I'm afraid of americans". It gets a bit too electronic of you listen to it too much, but limit your exposure to it, and it's enjoyable.

Lastly, Silverchair did a B-side a few years ago called "Thrash". It was pretty goth. I think it's only available on their 'best-of' album though.......

I thought Christian Death's "Ashes" was pretty good. Death In June and Current93, if you like neo-folk.

Also, how about some goth-by-accident? I took these off Iraqi TV and did a little crude splicing:

excerpted from the big Stars for War concert

It's the lead-in to their news program and it *breathes*

What other music do you like Cholister? Would you like more guitar-goth, synthpop-goth or dance-goth?

Probably stretching definitions but have you heard stuff like VNV Nation or Covenant?

bjaques - Death in June's Nazi sympathies mean that I'm never ever going to listen to 'em. rakehell - guitar goth, I guess. But not too hard to listen to - most of the time, and I know it's pathetic, I haven't got the energy. But I like some variety, so anything that stands out as particularly wonderful would be cool.

I like Morphine, Elijah.

I like some of The Cures stuff too, I'd recommend ATR I really don't know if they could be classified as goth though. Actually what classifies as goth, is it purely a wearing black and make up thing, or is it more to do with the music? Some would classify Cradle of Filth as Goth but aren't they more Pantomine Death Metalers?

I don't think Einstürzende Neubauten are exactly goth, but I do believe that the first couple of albums are certainly goth as fuck. Very, very much so.

You could also watch Blixa Bargeld sing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" in its original German for some spooky goodness. Needs RealPlayer, though.

Cradle of Filth make me want to laugh and turn them off rapidly. I bought Miranda Sex Garden's Suspiria on Amazon Marketplace, but I was feeling awful and then asleep for most of the time it was on. It gave me weird dreams however, and I will report back when I've heard it properly.

I've never really listened to Einsturzende Neubauten (although I know what the name means, because I collect info like that unconsciously). And although I love Nick Cave, I've never heard the Birthday Party properly either. I think I must rectify this.

Thank you, everyone.

bjacques- when I'm a famous rock megastar, that dirge will be my intro music.

And chol- don't let a (perfectly reasonable) bias against Death In June put you off Current 93... they may have been connected in the past, but 93 are so not Nazis... and the music, while much of it is in a similar vein, is much better.

And in a comedy-metal-goth kind of vein, I don't know if it's possible to still get hold of any Creaming Jesus, but they were fucking brilliant. (I had to add that because while tidying I found my old jacket with "Creaming Jesus" painted on the back. And cos they were ace.)

y'know I cannot think of many good artistes... as I supposedly kind that kind of sound...

you could try This Mortal Coil. I have an EP by Nature and Organization and love that though I have not heard anything else by them. or if you can find them the two CD's by Opium Den.

God help me for replying to a Goth thread but I have to concur that Creaming Jesus were a wonderful band. However, technically they were actually a "Gosh" band. Goth/thrash you see?

oh and I forgot the third of my triumvarate of faves, early His Name Is Alive. the first two (maybe three... I have not heard all of "King of Sweet") official releases. I love that stuff! (the other two of the trio Miranda Sex Garden and This Mortal Coil...) just the eeeearly HNIA though.

oh, and does Chris & Cosey count.

I warm to this thread.

I just got a MurderDolls cd, goth wise I don't know more lyrically stunted metal punk but they do wear face paint and there is something very satisfying about their unserious rockin songs.

Sometimes Interpol sounds exactly like Joy Division playing Smiths songs; and if you fancy Birthday party, you just might like The eighties matchbox b-line disaster.

so, Cholister, you like DCD, Nick Cave, Diamanda Galas, Morphine. you don't seem to like goth-rock, deathrock, black metal, or the gothy end of industrial (Bauhaus, Sisters, NIN, Cradle of Filth, Manson).

from what you've said so far, i'd recommend more darkwave and apocalyptic folk.

i agree with Chairman Maominstoat wholeheartedly - don't let DiJ's Nazi bullshit scare you off of C93.

also:

Changelings
Coil
black tape for a blue girl
Trance to the Sun
Lycia
Deine Lakaien
(start with the acoustic album if you can)
