Therapy? '92
My first ever gig. Saw them in a horrible pub in my home town and was blown away by them. They were the best band in Ireland for a while there. It was also my first time in a mosh pit and on Friday it will be 11 years to the day.
Metallica '92
My second gig. Oh my god, it was great. Back when no band would play Dublin, Metallica came and kicked our asses. A 2 1/2 hour show where for the first song the ecstatic crowd drowned out the PA just singing along.
Nine Inch Nails '94
The Downward Spiral tour where I saw Reznor clock one of his band mates with a Les Paul, smash the fuck out of the stage and play Dead Souls.
Radiohead '97
So I hadn’t heard Ok Computer and I was arse deep in mud (ah Glastonbury) but the boys were amazing! And I nearly ripped my spine out, never try to pogo in a muddy field.
Orbital '99
So I decided to try a straight dance gig as I'd been listening to techno metal for a while and Orbital seemed like a good start. (I'd fallen in love with The Box and Style) It was also one of my first E experiences. What a place to start. My fears that it would be a chilled out gig were put behind me as they tore through the middle of Nowhere ripping the place apart with as full on Techno as Orbital get. By the time they got to Satan, the kiddie clubbers there to see Pete Tong were running in terror from the stage. Which was funny.
Nick Cave 2000
I say Nick playing Glastonbury in 98 and he was good but the mud and the sound were awful, so I jumped at the chance to see him in doors. Wow! I’d say there are a few people here who’ve seen the Bad Seeds in full effect and will agree that it’s amazing. Nick was in full preacher mode, throwing shapes like there was no tomorrow and Bixa is just one of the coolest people on the planet.
Leftfield 2000
So I’m getting into both dance music and drugs and I’m at Glastonbury again. (One of the best places in the world to mix the both) I’ve never liked anything of theirs except the Original (Humm… Toni) So I resolved to take acid and go dancing. And boy do I, by the time they hit Situation Check one I’m a blur of ass shaking, by Phat Planet, I’m reduced to bouncing and flailing.
Slayer '02
So I got my first Slayer album in 1991 and didn’t get round to see them till last summer. God it was worth the wait. Dave Lombardo was filling in for their new drummer so they decided to play most of the set from Raining blood, South of Heaven and Seasons. Dear god it rocked so hard.
Honourable mentions go to Sepultura, Paradise Lost, Pop Will Eat Itself, (no, really) Helmet and Terrovision (love that pogoing!). There are many other great gigs, but these are the ones I remember, this early in the morning. |
