this is so late, but uh, I checked and no one hasn't started a thread on this, so here it is. Gangster no.1 directed by paul mguigan staring malcom mcdowell, fucking paul bettany, saffron burrows and some other people. I really loved this one, about a thug that works his way up to the top. the structure, photography tricks, acting, damn, paul bettany is brilliant, and story just made this a great movie. what did you people think?

"Look at me.......look into my fucking eyes."

I just saw it recently. I thought it was a pretty fantastic flick. I've never seen a movie featuring a torture scene from the perspective of the victim :-)

I agree that Paul Bettany was brilliant, and I've always liked David Thewlis. Excellent characters and a lot of grit.

"look at me...look into my fucking eyes." was definitely one of the high points in the film from my perspective.
oh then there's that whole "I'm filling up." scene.
David Thewlis was great in this as well, one of the reasons why this movie made such a impact on me was because all of the actors were great in their respective roles.
but deezamn, I expected a lot of people to have seen this one, especially on barbelith. you ought to check it out if you haven't seen it-it's my favorite film of 2002.

I saw this two nights ago on your reccomendation, method man, and then again last night.

I'm amazed I never heard of this before - everyone who saw it with me both times agreed that (1) It's fucking amazing, and (2) we can't remember being scarred by a movie this much in years.

Thank's for the heads up.

shit, no problem, I'm glad I got through to uh two people. the only thing is that I do have to agree with one reviewer when he said that it could've been a much better film if malcom mcdowell held up his side as well as Bettany did-Bettany was the freakishly obese kid playing on the seesaw with lanky ol mcdowell. and you know Paul should've gotten nominated for his acting in a beautiful mind, his acting has me laughing in a overwhelming feeling of satisfaction-but I don't want to give others impossible expectations so: eh, fff, I gueee-ehss he's alright. the internal screaming was tight.

yeah, i saw it on release couple years ago... like you say, bettany is ice cool and mcdowell... unfortunate. that said, considering the catastrophic decision to have all characters except one (bettany/mcdowell) play themselves young and old, it was always going to be a strain.

if nothing else, the brutal banality of the set-pieces was at least a welcome respite from the mockney caper movies clogging screens at the time with over-elaborate plots and cheap attempts at *charisma*.

similarly, though a very different kind of film, 'sexy beast' was a british gangster movie that proved an interesting exception.

but i don't think any of the most recent crop, especially the heavily over-rated 'croupier' come close to the likes of the original 'get carter'. or my personal fave involving a sharp-suited psychotic, 'performance'.

'mojo' was pretty good, though its stage roots showed thru... harold pinter's lecherous villain - brrr.

what are other great gangster films,or films with psychotics? I've seen Sexy Beast, loved Ben Kingsley in it. so far croupier, get carter and mojo.

Just want to second the props for 'Performance'. I love that film. Interesting that you should mention Pinter in the same post: I always thought there was something Pinteresque about the dialogue and menace in 'Perfomance'.

"I'll never let you go, why? Because I love you!"

Trust me, you can't hear that song ever again without thinking "You fucking cunt....fucking....dead....cunt....you cunt.....dead......cunt"

In fact, never has a movie had such frequent, and well employed use of that most taboo of all words.

Right from the off.

"Well, what d'you take me for? A cahnt?"

Priceless.

Gotta love the transparent homoerotic fagginess of the whole gangster thing also.

yeah that whole scene where he's getting off from freddy's outfit was cool and his monologue about being jealous that freddy has fallen for saffron(what was her name, karen?).

hey! what about the whole "that's me, out of the car. see a car. pick it up. m.o.t. through it a million miles." and "I'm filling up. I'm filling up!"

what's m.o.t. by the way?
