On Channel 4 UK tonight...May be interesting...

20:15 Do You Believe in Magic?
The Devil's Work
Despite the advances of rationalism, a belief in the supernatural has stubbornly remained. This new three-part series charts the history of magic in Britain. This first episode tells the story of how early Christianity opposed paganism and magic - branding it the devil's work.

Watched it. Not bad. Very focused on Christianity, though. Hopefully will focus more on the modern use of Magick in a future episode.

Damn! Wish I'd seen this in time. Next Saturday...
I thought Christianity appropriated paganism rather than opposed it? Can't wait to see the third one, although I'm sure it will be dumbed right down for a populist audience.

Is the third one focusing on modern occultism then? Will probably have a lot of salacious stuff about the Golden Dawn and Crowley, but should be quite good nonetheless. At least they took a pretty balanced view in the first one, although they did kind ofg brush over the facts that Christianty appropriated pagan beliefs rather than just banning them or opposing them directly. And I thought the bit about John Dee was a bit rushed, with no mention made of Edward Kelly at all!

Pop Magick, what a frightening new trend- dumbed down occult histories on TV, a good or a bad thing?

for those who missed the first episode I will be videoing all three and you are welcome to borrow it once the tape is finished.

Reason why it mainly focused on chrisitianity was to give the historical view of magic (with or without the k) in this country. I did like the way they showed what was called magic, or the devil's work back in the day (so to speak), which seemed to encapsulate everything that wasn't part of the Protestant Church, encluding the catholic church at times.

It was rushed but there were a fair few years to pack into the programme. The Guardian guide had it at "1,500 years in an hour, or 25 years a minute". Plus I think the title of the series means they are only going to look at the believes in magic over the years, whether pro or con.

I'm guessing next saturday the episode will be science belief vs. magic belief and then the third showing the rise of the "new age" movement, but it's just a guess.

Have found this site here
for the series which goes into the history and has a few links too.
