Personals: Success and Suggestions?

Hey folks,

I am thinking of placing a personal add (say on the same service that does the personals on theonion and disinfo) and I was just curious if anyone here has had any success with them and would be willing to impart any suggestions.

Any feedback is welcome!

I have used the interactive personals on Gaydargirls. They're better than the average personal because you can chat to someone for a while before divulging any personal info, and because they're split into geographical sections. I met a few people, had plenty of sexual propositions that I may still accept, made a couple of friends, sort of. I find it a bit soul destroying, just like I used to find PowWow soul destroying, talking to people who I wouldn't click with in a million years just to get to the occasional person on my wavelength. But, if you have the spare time, it's worth it. I don't know if the personals you intend to use are anything like that, but I would say that if you're looking for a relationship rather than just a shag, be pretty honest. And if funny is your thing, and you have the space, make a joke - jokes are memorable (just make sure it's a good one, you don't want to be remembered for a cringeworthy joke). Good luck, dude.

I'm on disinfo personals (blush). (do a search for 'tophat23' if you want to see). I've never actually met anyone off it, but I do have an aquaintance who I email off and on. I haven't yet had the nerve or inclination to actually try and contact anyone myself, but some people have 'collect call'ed me.

Tip: To use the service without paying, hide your email within the profile so people can contact you without paying $25 for credits. Oddly enough I found an old thread here about this the other day.
