Trying to limit myself to "made me laugh out loud in public" and I come up with anything written by Douglas Adams, both volumes of The Diary of Bridget Jones, and Stars and Bars by William Boyd. There are lots of others that have made me smile but that's another thread.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
by Christopher Moore

Funniest book involving a crucifixion you will ever read. Jesus and his best friend travel the earth, learn kung fu, pick up babes (and since the lord is chaste, Biff comes out pretty good), learn magic and a bunch of other great stuff.

Super read.

"Bear v Shark" by Chris Bachelder. I'm quick to recommend this one whenever anyone asks for a recent book, a funny book, a David Foster Wallace-like book, or a fast read.
Also, Pynchon's been mentioned, which is good, but why hasn't anyone brought up Mr. Wallace himself? This summer I'll have the time to re-read "Infinite Jest," and I'm fucking drooling at the prospect.

They have mentioned Flann O'Brien (ho ho) and they have mentioned Thomas Pynchon (hee hee) but they have not mentioned Terry Southern (psssssssss).

Those of you who like a bit of Doug Adams should check out Robert Sheckley. I've only read Dimension of Miracles and Mind Swap but they're both absolutely frigging brilliant. Ganzer eggs. I laughed my ass off. A lot more full frontal bizarro than Adams as well. There's a an account of re-reading Sheckley here

To quote:
Douglas Adams (used) Sheckley's work - in particular the 1968 novel Dimension of Miracles - as the prototype for his Hitchhiker's Guide series. (Asked what he considered to be the major difference between his books and Sheckley's, Adams said, "Sheckley's are better." Sheckley, asked the same question, replied, "Doug Adams makes a lot more out of his books than I do out of mine.")

Not sure whether that quote refers to money or not. Ruins my image of the liteary world as a genial gentlemans club. (@Scuse the sexism). But they're still cracking books.
