Bringing this back up, what with all the rumblings in Westminster and being reported on Newsnight, The Archers for politicos. Blair has never hidden his admiration for Thatcher, is he now in the position of having stayed too long as well? The whole 'really bad local election results' thing sounds like an excuse, the Government always does badly in these, they are always protest votes, and Labour always had more to lose and the other parties more to gain. This is a swing to the Tories such as New Labour enjoyed in the mid-90s.
So, what's going on? Are Labour ready to knife their leader? Is the combination of public dissatisfaction and the 'new' Tories enough to convince enough Labour MPs and party members that the first Labour leader to win three elections in a row is now a threat to their continued governance? Will Tony jump or will he have to be knifed, tied down with breeze blocks, pissed over and pushed? And if he doesn't go quietly, will that leave the Labour party in the same position as the post-Thatcher Tories, in power but falling apart? |
