well i bought ults and uxm finally, with a timely feeling of guilt. ults feels like progov propaganda from the forties. i expect millar to come out with a nice compromisey finale, wasp and gman back together, cap learning a lesson about the modern world and stuff. i don't expect the outcomes of those conclusions to be delivered with the same glee and breathlessness that he's been making everyone seem an arsehole with [bad sentence that, who cares there's a war on]. millar having done extreme left with the authority does extreme right with the ultimates. he only really likes to do extremes it seems. being a bit of a leftover lefty myself ultimates just makes me feel sick. the characters are in bad soap-opera situations with worse dialogue, preaching war and division. let the aliens win.
even in uxm government extremism is being excused by the further extremism of the terrorists. and the xmen are like these awful human-appeasers who should be looking for revenge on fury, not magneto. but millar has built up some good faith in me and i'll be back for more next month [or whenever].
as for nxmen this month 'every man and woman is a star' and not much more needs to be said. nice art and action, best in the biz.
and i've read some alias lately. didn't offend me that much but not a lot happens there does it? who remembers the eighties? bendis only writes about the personal, but my favourite comics are more concerned with the political. stories with belaboured dialogue about how its bad that kids get bullied for being different at school? what's so good and big in that, why the fuss?
anything else? oh yeah i really like the truth and best buy o' the week was probably the dark horse dredd v aliens thing. i love dredd when he's done right, but 2 quid a week for five pages plus what can only be called 'shit brit sci-fi'?
sorry about this thread i feel a bit listless at the moment. the protestors annoy me as much as the soldiers politicians and cnn correspondents today and i want to talk about superheroes because they're more realistic. somebody reply though otherwise i'll look a right twat. if n e 1 can dun-can can. |
