Some of the biggest rallies this month have endorsed President Bush's strategy against Saddam Hussein, and the common thread linking most of them is Clear Channel Worldwide Inc., the nation's largest owner of radio stations.

"I think this is pretty extraordinary," said former Federal Communications Commissioner Glen Robinson, who teaches law at the University of Virginia. "I can't say that this violates any of a broadcaster's obligations, but it sounds like borderline manufacturing of the news."

cnn today proudly described themselves as a weapon in the us forces' psy-ops artillery. that's not journalistic integrity either is it? the people who are up for this war are ever-so much better organised than those who aren't.

A lot of what we're seeing and hearing in the media is only secondarily targeted at the folks in the UK and US: the real audience is the Iraqi regime, all of whom watch CNN and/or the Beeb.

Interesting article in The NEw Republic about this issue—about who's using who in this regard: the press relies on the military for access, the military relies on the press as a carrier for its psy ops. But it really does cut both ways...

The war in Bosnia gave rise to a catchphrase, "the CNN effect." It meant that television in general, and CNN in particular, possessed the power to force governments, and especially the U.S. government, to pay attention to particular issues or crises; priorities and even policy could be set by klieg lights...
