The website for the UK based newspaper, the Independent is reporting That the UK Foreign Office is currently investigating news from Bulgarian sources that Tariq Aziz has defected

Other reports being investigated include claims that Tariq Aziz has been shot dead

it should be pointed out that nothing has been confimed at this stage and this could all turn out to be entirely unfounded.

IIRC, Saddam very, very recently had Aziz's son sent away to prison for 20 years for alledged seditious behavior. Anyone have a link on that?

The Kurds say:

Aziz’s role has considerably diminished within the Baathist hierarchy in the last two years, especially after last year’s 25-year jail sentence of his son Ziyad , for running an illicit commission and kick-back business within the UN Oil-for-Food Program in competition with Saddam’s sons, Uday and Qusay.
