every other dictator i can think of that we have gone to war with/dealt with has been known by their surname; stalin, hitler, mugabe, mussolin et al.

I always thought it was a/ to make him familiar & less threatening, and b/ because of the words "Damn" and "Sodom".

I think MJ-12 has it, although it could be for much the same reason that we talk of "Dubya" - because the speaker wants to diminuate the person concerned, diminish the weight accorded them in the discussion, and also, in a small way, control or even assail them.

Yeah. It also seems that Joseph and Robert are pretty white boy names (and Benito just sounds nice). Saddam has that sinister sound of otherness.
