Reed Richards accused of murder

Another shocking story from the London Times, 11th March 2003:

"US SCIENTIST CLAIMS STRANGE DEFENCE IN HOMICIDE INQUIRY

Dr Reed Richards, the prominent New York City scientist, inventor and adventurer, has sensationally been accused of murder following the disappearance of his wife Susan Storm Richards.

Dr Richards was arrested by NYPD officers at 8.30 this morning and taken in for questioning after claims from Mrs Richards' brother John that he had not seen her for a week. The close-knit family have lived together in an apartment complex in the world-famous Baxter Building for some years and have an enviable reputation as respectable public figures, which makes this revelation all the more surprising.

The story took an unusual twist when Dr Richards claimed under interrogation that his wife was 'invisible' due to cosmic ray bombardment in space which had triggered a bodywide mutagenic change some time ago. He claimed the same bombardment had triggered similar changes in his own physiology, and indeed that of his brother-in-law John, who declined to comment. Despite wild demonstrations in which Dr Richards spread his body over an entire wall in the interrogation room, police remained sceptical as to his defence."

Geez, I can't believe the extremes these excentric scientists go to. What's next? Hawkings claiming that he is a telepath and that he can do astral travel?
I'm sure Richards used some weird quantum physics trick to do that on the wall.

Well I hear he claimed something about a test flight in outer space, but come on, we all know that was faked in a studio by the government, right?

I think we should be careful on our speculations in an open forum like this one. I have it on good authority that SHIELD are now routinely monitoring sites where dissident opinions may be raised.

What I will say, though, is that I find it hard to believe that he did it. They always seemed the perfect couple on TV. My money's on a smear campaign, or maybe a kidnapping, by Latverian sympathisers.

Well that would explain a lot. Mind you, Richards was uncharacteristically low-key in his response to suggestions there might be weapons of mass destruction in Latveria.

On a practical note, it was suggested in the Captain America thread that we should put all these daft superhero news stories in one thread. That would be cool, then we could imagine a kind of alternative reality where, like, superheroes exist as public figures. Could be a laugh. Does the technology exist to do this, mods?
