HTML gone awry

So, after Who's Your Tzaddi?'s post in the Magick, in which there are some wacky characters in the subject line, everything below is altered slightly--I think there was an unclosed /bold tag, or something.

First, that's something to fix. Second, and more importantly... isn't allowing such unrestrained HTML (in subject lines, maybe the rest of the board) a security risk? I know jack-all about "security", but I was under the impression that if you didn't restrict the kinds of HTML that could be used on a bulletin board, there becomes the possibility that some mook could do really annoying things like replace all the datelines in a forum with pictures, or fuck up the tables that the fora are built with, or start a zillion pop-up windows. (I saw something like that happen on another board... it was the nanowrimo messageboard, and one day it had a lot more porn than usual.)

I think I'm right in saying that the decision to allow us to use HTML was one based on trust, with the small print stating that if anyone starting abusing that trust, we'd be limited to bold and italics.

That said, I've no idea what kind of limits are currently in force.

There are some filters already in place: as far as I know there's no scrolling text, no tables, no blinky text, no block quotes, no colored text, no headings and (oddly) no para or break tags... it's pretty much bold, para, lists, links, and pics—bare-bones HTML.

The heading styles seem to be deactivated as well.

To be honest, not really knowing much about this stuff... if it could be abused, I can think of a couple of occasions when it probably would've been. And it wasn't. So, by Stoatie's Luddite system of scoring things, I think we're on a "low-risk" setting.

I didn't mean to visually offend. Very sad on one hand, on the other, touched to have a thread dedicated to my grafitti!® ♥♥♥ R∃∀LLY sorry to mess up the "ÆSTHETICS" of what is by and large perceived as a Ghetto Forum. I will restrict my HTML T∈RRθRiŠM to within my postings. Not aware it would cause an error.Just af form of expression.

don't sweat it, Tzaddi - you forgot to put a /b tag at the end of your title, and that made all the text afterwards get bolded. I fixed the tag, so all should be well.

Yeah—go right ahead being cryptic, pretentious, and utterly ignorable.

It's got nothing to do with "aesthetics" and everything to do with clarity of communication. If you want to go out of your way to make your posts hard to read, feel free: but be aware that people (a) may decide it's not worth the effort to keep reading, and/or (b) think you're a bit full of yourself.

I wonder if Tzaddi realizes that hir attitude towards constructive criticism is not only typical of the Magick Forum, but a good example of the type of attitude that keeps the Magick the "Ghetto Forum" that it is.

Pretending to be radical and different is so much easier than actually going through the processes of work and change that bring radical difference in one's life.

I'm inclined to agree. Tzaddi, everyone else here is expected to express their ideas clearly. Your wiggles get in the way of your content, which suggests that it's time to moderate yourself.

Oh, I kind of like 'em. As frames for the regular words, that is. /_33Γ≡speak, though, I tend to glaze over.

They're not wiggles, they are (largely) Ancient Greek characters, and he keeps using ksi as "e". It makes my teeth hurt.

Fortunately, the Magick seems to be going through one of its "your ghettoist forum *ever*" phases, so it shouldn't be inconveniencing too many people.

I believe I referred to this in PM as "gnostic h4x0r" at some point. Though yes, like lack of punctuation and Jeremy Beadle, it shits me to tears. Bah.

As a technical point, I think the filter here is exclusive rather than inclusive. I had a play myself when the new board came about. Security seems pretty solid.

Oh no!The Headshop is angry! What would any thread be without snide commentary. An HTML error turns slag-fest.

Hello there. I don't think anyone mentioned the Head Shop. I think you're confused. I'm not sure that anyone is angry, either, although Rothkoid appears to be very bored and I keep reading your "e"s as "ks"es, which makes my eyes hurt.

For reference, epsilon and eta, rather than ksi or sigma, are usually provided as equivalencies of "e" - the sound, you see. If you fancy moving into Ancient Hebrew, we'll neatly avoid that issue.

No worries. He's right, though, this thread has rotted to the bone. AFAIK, Barbelith accepts img tags, a tags, bold, italic, graemlins and HTML characters (altohugh I never have the energy to put them in myself)...anything else?

Was the board going all kerfluey last night html-related? Although I have a feeling, whatever the answer is, I won't understand it and will be left feeling like Catweazle.
