i was thinking recently about getting myself a job that i dont hate, a job where i actually am interested in the work i am doing.
it strikes me that i would probably be quite happy(at least for a while) working at one of the labels who produce music i listen to.

i was thinking primarily of labels based in the US(opr more exotic locations), so as to get me off this sombre isle. the first ones that came to mind were the punk labels, those of sound ethics and angry guitars.

has anyone here worked at a label?
does anyone currently?
how did you go about getting the job you have?
how would you advise me to go about getting started as an intern in a foreign land?

Get a directory (in the UK that'd be Music Week) and write to every single record company offering to work for free. Get in somewhere and make yourself so indispensable that they can't afford to lose you.

You will hit some visa difficulties in going to the US- that's a whole 'nother kettle of worms. I'd try the London labels first, so many of these companies have US ties that you might be able to get in somewhere and transfer later. Once you get some experience, Music Week and Billboard both have jobs pages.

Be prepared for a long period of working very hard and being very skint. The music biz has this idea that you 'pay your dues', in some cases until you die, without reward- this is because only about 1 in 20 records ever makes any money, and if your organisation is not riding on the back of one of those luck 5%, you won't be getting paid.

Good luck.

Most entry-level positions at record labels are unpaid internships, which you must apply for and compete with lots of other people who also desperately want the job. Some labels will obviously have more demand than others, and some very small labels won't even need/afford interns or other employees, so they'll probably just reject you.

What labels in specific were you considering?

The impression I get is that most good - eg, small - labels are run entirely by a very small number of people and make little or no money.

Thus probably not a very good place to look for gainful employment, sadly.

But then what do I know.

Here's some info on a few good labels:

Matador (from their FAQ)
Does Matador have an internship program?
Yup. Send your resume to Internships, Matador Records, 625 Broadway, New York, NY 10012. Internships are for a) personal satisfaction b) experience c) whatever, make up your own reason ONLY... i.e. no money. And you must be living in the New York area.

Is Matador hiring?
No. That would require someone else being fired or suffering a severe injury and we know you wouldn’t be rooting for that sort of thing.

Drag City

Chicagoland residents only need apply.
No pay, but plenty of experience will be offered for people with a bit of time on their hands and a bit of enthusiasm for getting them dirty. We need help with press cutting and pasting, tour promotions, cold-calling to retail, CD repackaging, stuffing mailings and other essential grade Z organizational duties. It's a window to the world of independent record sales — leap through it at your own risk. Digging the music would also be cool, but star-struck fans should think twice before dropping their name in the hat — you might never meet the Silver Jews while you comb through the stacks of unglamorous (but necessary) work we have here to do. Like marijuana, interning can be a gateway to far greater highs — it is what you make it!

Email credentials and other explanations to: sales@dragcity.com.
Let us know what kind of time you have to offer!

Kill Rock Stars

Q: are you hiring? is there any chance of working at yr company?
A: We get this question a lot. Occasionally we do have a vacancy, so feel free to send in your resume. Slim keeps a file of them. In the future if we get vacancies we will post them to the krs-newsletter list, and in CMJ and other trade magazines, as we have done in the past. It also looks like we might be using unpaid interns more in the future, but we only want to do this if you are getting college credit for it. It doesn't feel right to have people work here who aren't getting anything from it except the experience of being here. If you have a situation where you can get college credit for interning here, feel free to approach us about it, but it'll depend on what time of year it is, how much we have going on, etc.

I think you get the idea. Those are some of the indie rock heavyweights, but a lot of the other big indie labels don't even mention internships/jobs on their sites, and I think it's probably a fair guess that they just don't need anyone. Indie labels are fairly tight knit groups - they start with one or two people who then hire their friends and keep things very loyal. The odds of someone outside of the K or Dischord communities being hired by those labels would be almost next to none, for example.
