Time theory as taught by the movies

as with most things in life, the movies can teach you almost all you need to know.

can anyone recommend films that educated you on the nature of time? i am not just talking about travelling through time, but also stories covering the moral, ethical and philosophical ramifications.

everything i can get from the local video shop i then will.

Back To The Future, yo.

I'm sorry! Someone was going to say it and hell, I felt like being annoying.

Um lets see I tend to get more out of time travel books than movies.
Ever read or heard of the Domesday book? Thats interesting without getting too scientific or metaphysical.

Donnie Darko has an ethical twist, but the time theory really isn't wound as tight as I'd like... GREAT F'N MOVIE THOUGH.

What's that film about a 1940's battleship and a 1980's town getting sucked into a timewarp/dimension thing? I liked it.

I'll get back to you.

The battleship one that Chesed mentions must be the Philadelphia Experiment right?
All I can think of at the moment is Donnie Darko but there must be more. Wasn't there just a thread on time travel movies maybe some of them would qualify.

there was a thread, but i checked it and found it wasn't really that useful.

because it was about peoples faveourites, it was almost just a list. i only recognised the ones i had already seen, or intended to see.

what i am really looking for are movies that are the equivalent for time that fear and loathing was for the acid horrors.

in fact, especially any that deal with non linear experiences of time, possibly even linear time as experienced by non linear beings or vice versa.

Watching Memento in its real-time variation might have an aspect of the nonlinear experience in narrative. 12 Monkeys probably has the best practical time theory in its story... traveling naked, displacement, mental breakdowns... great film.

I'll keep thinking

ilike your thinking regarding memento...is that a feature of the DVD? is there a VHS version of it available?
