Count Adam, lmao at yr comments. So, so true.
What is somehow even more frustrating is when they have a great artist, but what you feel is *the wrong album* to choose by them.
I simply can't believe that the Strokes are up there w/the Smiths and the Velvets. That's just ricockulous.
At least 'Loveless' is #11.

So, so true.

Apart from the Sgt Peppers bit.

Jack Denfeld

Runce, you are a dickhead. But to answer your question, someone asked about Television and I knew some information about them so I helped the guy out. And I have heard them before, downloaded a couple of tracks but don't remember what they sounded like. And it's Denfeld. Not Denfield. If that was some clever play on my name I'm afraid it went totally over my head, but I assume you just accidently misspelled it.

Jack, I don't think Runce was making some kind of play on your suit's name - I'll admit that for some reason I kept reading it as "Denfield" too. It's just one of those things.

You must be the only internet-enabled person not to have heard it yet. Have been listening to it for weeks...

Runce is nice, Jack. Honestly.

Anyway, 'Spiderland' below 'Parklife'. I'll eat my face if that's right.

There's no justice.

My theory about the Roses and NME journalists is that the latter discovered the former at the same time they discovered pills. But they can't all have this excuse, surely.

Well no, but when you become one, they tell you...

Hang on a second. Knock on the door. Lester, is that...

AAAAAGH!

No Doors, either...What the fuck is going on there?

And is it too much to ask that a list of the ten best albums of all time should include, just possibly, you know, I mean I'm not hip or anything so just ignore me, but if we're talking all time, and it would seem from the title that we are, i.e. the entirety of recorded history, then wouldn't it be an idea to include like at least one fuckin' jazz record?

Just a thought there. Feel free to replace jazz with country, reggae, or any other musical genre which seems to have been overlooked here...

Btw, Count Adam, you forgot the 'kitsch irony' category which, presumably, would account for the presence of a fucking Dustie Springfield record in this list...

What's wrong with Dusty Springfield?

kitsch irony:
Madonna's "Like a Prayer", (which I love, but come fucking on) Beach Boys' "Surf's Up" ("Pet Sounds", sure, but "Surf's Up"?).
Roundtable question: Do you think anyone's dorky enough to read that and say, "Wow, I actually don't have some of those records! I'm going to go out and get them straightaway!"

Matthew Fluxington

Dorky? I don't think that's a good word for it.

Isn't a big chunk of NME's readership made up of teenagers? I think there's probably a huge chunk of that list that high school kids today might not really know that well and might be inspired to try out, sure.

As for Surf's Up, that's a really good album, particularly the last few songs. "Til I Die" is probably my favorite Beach Boys song, it's one of the most melancholy songs I've ever heard. It's so lonely and detached, it sounds like the peace that some people feel before resigning themselves to suicide. It's a powerful piece of music. Pet Sounds gets all of the press, but I think Surf's Up is just as good, if not better.

I'd like to point out that nearly all of the records on that list are worthwhile recordings - there's only a couple albums there which I really don't think are very good. The Vines just aren't very memorable, and I really despise AC/DC and Duran Duran though I will acknowledge that plenty of people dearly love them and there isn't really anything wrong with that. The problem isn't with the music, it's with the wrong-headed idea of putting the lists together. I'm sure another group of people could come up with another list which may seem a little more reasonable, but it still wouldn't be right. List-making is a fundamentally stupid and reductionist activity, and I think that the act of making them is very anti-art. These pointless hierarchies and canons neglect the breadth and variety of the arts, and perpetuate lots of damaging myths about art and artists.

Sorry, Denfield, I just thought all yr info was just, well, unnecessary. Sounded like you were quoting from 'Englands Dreaming' or something.

But I accept that I had my intolerhead on. Ignore it, for it rants incessantly.

I've always read yr name as "Denfield" - weird, eh?

I'm rarely "clever" on the lith at the mo'. Normally just talkin' nonsense and taking the piss. I wish I had more to give.

No star here laces

It's dead easy, right:

1. Stevie Wonder - "Songs in the key of life"
2. James Brown - "Live at the apollo"
3. Sly and the Family Stone - "There's a riot goin on"
4. Miles Davis - "Kind of blue"
5. Janis Joplin - "Got them kosmic blues again mama"
6. Bob Dylan - "The freewheelin Bob Dylan"
7. De La Soul - "Three feet high and rising"
8. Joni Mitchell - "Blue"
9. Rolling Stones - "Exile on main street"
10.Marvin Gaye - "Lets get it on"

I mean, who could argue with that, eh?

(cos there are four token white acts in there, y'get me?)

5 if you count De La Soul. They aren't real black people.
