Innovative recording techniques

By way of research into a fictional music project I'd like to know any stories anyone has about how songs have been recorded.

Examples:

Eighties AOR producer Bob Clearmountain (perfect name) would listen to the song he was mixing on a loop until he fell asleep. Any aspect of the music that would stick out and prevent him from sleeping would then get adjusted. This would go on until a good and soporific sound was reached.

Marvin Gaye would have a wank before recording so that his performance was clear of unclean thoughts.

all the stories you need.

Also, go to NPR's website and do a search for "Chris Butler" - he was interviewed on Weekend Edition. The stuff about the Led Zeppelin mobile studio is pretty cool.

Wow! Cheers, Grant. I particularly liked Chris Butler's use of antiquated recording devices. I've been thinking about approximating wax cylinder recording for this project and- shit- this guy's doing it for real! I shall be reading further. Thankyou.
