Today Could Be Your Lucky Day! (On the Development of the Divinatory Faculty)

There's another thread over there on John Dee, which has a summary of "Reading the signs of synchronicity", but has ended up being about "who's Enoch and why's all that John Dee stuff called 'Enochian', anyway?"

I thought the summary deserved more investigation in its own right, and I have something to offer to this, hence this thread. We'll see what happens.

On the Development of the Divinatory Faculty
(A publication in class C-)

0. The Student shall Obtain (through zir own Ingenium) a set of Percentile Dice.*
1. Each Morning, after Rising, the Student shall (with attendant Ritual and Ceremony as ze may deem Appropriate) Cast the Dice, and note carefully the Value** thereby Derived.
2. The Student shall otherwise conduct zir Business throughout the course of the Day as ze may be Accustomed to Do.
3. Each Evening, before Retiring, the Student shall sit in Meditation and Reflect on the Events of the Day, keeping in Mind the Value Obtained through the Casting of the Dice.
4. (It is Recommended, although not Required, that the Student give some Consideration to the Numerological, Qabalisitical and otherwise Daimonic Possibilities and Potentials of the Value which has been Given to zir.)
5. (It is Further Recommended, although again not Required, that the Student likewise keep in mind the precept that one deal with All Phenomena as Special Communiques between the Powers and the Student's Soul when considering both the Day and the Value.)
6. The Student should note any Conclusions, Intuitions or Other Correspondences which might be Noted as a Result of this Meditation in zir Magickal Diary.
7. The Student should Persist Diligently in this Exercise for a Period of no less than Three Months.
8. Periodically (and at a Periodicity of the Student's Selection, but Fortnightly is a Useful Possibility--Daily is Certainly too Often) the Student should Review zir Record, and attempt to Intuit (through zir own Ingenium) in What Regard the Values being given to zir in the Casting of the Morning May Appertain to the various Events of the various Days.
9. It is Imperative that the Student keep Firmly in Mind throughout the Course of this Exercise that All Events are Connected, that the Large is Reflected in the Small, and that, in fact, the Only Difference between the Large and the Small is that the Small can be grasped by the Hand, and held in the Eye, of the Magician.
10. Aumgn Ha!***

*Percentile dice are ten-sided dice which come in sets of two, one marked "0", "1", and so on, through to "9", and the other similarly marked "00", "10", through "90". They can be readily obtained through most gaming stores. The student might wish to consider and weigh the precepts that one should a) "do everything as beautifully as possible" and b) "buy an egg without haggling".
**This will be a number, depending on how one reads the combination "00/0", ranging between either 0 and 99, or 1 and 100, gotten by summing the two topmost faces of the dice. The choice here is left to the student, and should be given thoughtful consideration.
***If this works for you, you so owe me a quarter. Robert Anton Wilson can tell you how to find one of those. Aumgn ho ho!

Some comments on the preceding:

If one is inclined to try out this practice, it might be interesting to do so in conjunction with reading Luke Rheinhardt's The Dice Man, the "adventures in probability" of a fellow (coincidentally named "Luke Rheinhardt") who makes up his mind to live by the fall of the die. It amounts to what one might consider a *cough*cough* "Left-Hand Path" version of the practice described, considered from a certain point of view...

The fact that this book has two whole chapters worth of one of the hottest extended sex scenes I've come across to date has nothing whatsoever to do with this recommendation.

I mean it. Nothing. No kidding.

I will try this and post results here after a suitable time. I use a 4 sided die to read the I Ching actually (1 + 2 for unchanging lines, 3 = 4 for changing) so I may be able to link in any numbers gained with these divinations or vice-versa.

And yup, I recall giving "The Diceman" a, um, "close read" in my fevered teenage years.

I might add I've being trying to teach myself a method of I Ching numerology which involves pulling heaxagrams out of numbers and situations. This may interlink as well, I could be entering into a numerological abyss...

Can't find much about it on line - there's a link here, on the most fideously ugly page I've ever seen. When I feel confident enough with it I'll summarise it in another thread.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'd been thinking about picking up some such dice a while back, but then the comix and games store moved and couldn't find any of their inventory....

I think the only thing missing from the whole description was the instruction to "Stand ewect." It all rolled out in Regardie's voice so very convincingly...
