Am I the only person to thinks that Bo’ Selecta! was the best thing on TV last year? Even the intros to the “best of” bits were funnier than anything else on TV: Sir Elton John “I hate Bo Selecta…………I’ll bum you, not just today, but for the rest of your lives. Classic.

It IS very funny - love the way that he just skewers the most obvious and amusing traits of people he spoofs; Beyonce thinks she IS Destiny's Child, Mel B growls in a limp attempt to be scary, Ozzy's incoherent and tattooed, etc. Kind of obvious, but when combined with impersonations which are sometimes spot-on and other times don't seem to give a monkey's if they're any good (non-imitation being the sincerest form of showing you couldn't care less about your target), I think it's a lot of fun.

And is it just me, or could his neck-brace wearing persona be seen as some kind of extreme version of the current celeb-obsessive Closer/Hello/OK! readers so many people seem to be ? If that's deliberate, then I like the satirical point. If not... well, the satire still kind of works.

Mmm, his programme makes me do a sex wee. Thankyou please.

It's a chap called Avid Merrion, who seems to have risen to his own series after appearing on C4 shows 'dedicated to celebdom' such as Big Brother's Little Brother, and I think, T4's Popworld.

The show's based around poking fun at people in the music and TV worlds, with Merrion alternately pretending to worship them all (turning up at award ceremonies and signings and gushing and being very rude indeed to them), or dressing up in a variety of odd costumes (one like a bear, which I can't even begin to describe in parenthesis, and a whole parade of grotesque masks for various people) and just being downright insulting.

I think he's better than Ali G, because - unless Merrion actually startes to act like a real celeb fan - I think it's fairly clear that he's taking the michael, whereas I think in the end Ali G ended up being the poster boy for exactly the kind of wannabe rude boys* that the character was initially meant to satirise.

Though to be fair, I think that Merrion has less of a writerly input than Sacha Baron Cohen did. Though Merrion's artwork - which is often featured in the show - does appear to be rather impressive.

*I used this phrase in talking about Ali G on Barbelith a year or so ago, and was given some hassle for it, but I still feel it's fair...
