Expected outcome of Iraq war.....

I read this in the local paper yesterday and nearly pissed myself laughing. Unfortunately it doesn't give a source.....just a "Whitehouse spokesperson".

"In our best case scenario, regime change in Baghdad would trigger the spread of democracy and freedom throughout the Middle East. Awed by America's power, Muslim support for terrorism would evaporate, Palestinians and Israelis would make peace and global anti-American sentiment would evolve into gratitude and goodwill"

Once again I ask,,,,,,how can people so incredibly stupid have so much power?

Jesus man, how comforting it must be to live in a little bubble like that.

Ari Fleischer is the major White House spokesperson. Not that it matters. Why? Because he didn't say it. Bush did:

The thing that worries me is the implicit schmaltzy 'and-it-all worked out-[oil]well-in-the-end' disney feel about that comment.....Was it for public consumption or heart felt The latter I suspect. The guy clearly buys into the structure of the popular myths of western culture. I don't like hard headed realists in power but if there's one thing I like even less it's fantasy merchants. Oh and while we're at it the problem with western fantasies applied to reality is that at some point the credits have to roll. Now when will that be do you think?

You've got to hand it to them though, whoever they were -- I certainly couldn't find the quote in the Yahoo story cited above -- that is the best case scenario. It's just not very bloody likely, that's all. Kind of a reverse domino theory.

Unfortunately, the speaker isn't the only one with a fantasy.

Shoot, that summary forgot that a swift US (and, you know, those allies along for the ride) victory will also cause the average Arab and Asian on the street to decide that Allah has failed him, throw over 1400 (lunar) years of religious tradition, and eat a McBacon Cheese for Jesus. Hal-le-fucking-lu-jah!

Anybody remember the Alpha-Omega Bomb Hymn from "Beneath the Planet of the Apes?"

Fuck. How long does it take to trigger the peace and democracy already?

the most frustrating thing about such innocuous commentary is that I don't think the spokespeople believe it any more than we do...

It's just keeping up the facade while the blood continues to spill - as much as anyone tries to engage spokespeople in debate about anything: human rights violations, climate change, Iraq, Iran, the answers all come out in rhetoric, which distracts from the actual point.

"Mr president, when will you stop murdering Iraquis and bring your troops home?"

"When the Iraqi people embrace democracy, liberty and freedom."

etc... it don't mean a thing.

then again, sometimes they do mean it, and that's what really scares me

The thing that disgusts (rather than appals, frightens, angers etc...) me most of all is Mr Tony's insistence that we should "move on" from Iraq. Like all it ever was was a political issue. Like it may have been a bad decision, and cut his majority somewhat, but we in the UK should stop worrying about it now, cos he'll make it up to us with his domestic policy.

Like people aren't still dying. Like it's not gonna turn into what Afghanistan did after we "freed" it (not much news coverage there. Wonder why? Shouldn't we be all jubilant and hailing a success? Oh, I see...). Like we haven't created a whole new generation of "terrorists".

Doesn't matter. We WON, okay? Let's move on.

Fuck you, Mr Tony. Fuck you very much.

Other unexpected outcomes... The US pushes democracy in the middle east, but amongst its allies rather than nations it is in disagreement with, and without resorting to invasion...

An interesting and unexpected development, one that could be quite risky but perhaps more sustainable in the long term...

Very unexpected sleazenation. I still doubt that the USA would want the Muslim Brotherhood winning free and fair elections in Egypt? Or Osama bin Laden in Saudi Arabia?
I wonder how the countries in question will respond? Is there any connection between this and todays record breaking price of oil?

Iraq is only a means of getting to Iran. That's been the U.S. goal since WWII. We don't intend to leave, We never did.
