In case anyone cares, I've gotta do the whole "tube-up-butt"/bowel cancer check-up thing tomorrow. While to say "I'm absolutely shitting myself" would probably be a bad choice of words, I am somewhat terrified by the prospect.

And I'm fucking starving, cos I'm not allowed to eat again until after the procedure. (Oh well... at least I've been given the night off work so I can sit on the fucking toilet. And apparently the drugs are gonna be wonderful.)

Gah. Scared now. And uncomfortable.

Oh dear. I've just impugned your innocence in the Mafia thread. To be honest I was just overreacting to your vague suss of me. Good job it's only a game ... unlike the above.

If it's any comfort at all the second time I went under general aneasthetic (assuming that's what they give you? maybe not.. )I woke up completely unaware that the procedure had taken place and nobly refused tea and biscuits post-op because I thought I was still waiting to be operated on.

And I was high as a fucking kite for the rest of the day - probably some sort of morphine analogue? No idea. But you should definitely ask for some.

Are you approaching this as a neo-shamanistic thing? I think I would. Fasting, self-knowledge, breaking of taboos, ritualistic behavior...

Anyway, it's a more common procedure than you might at first believe, and the folks I know in here (the newsroom) who've had one treat it as not that big a deal. A hassle, but not worth the dread it instills in the virgin.

Yes, I work in a place where people like talking about their insides.

Speaking of webcasts, if anyone here's played the game System Shock 2 some of the corridor sections are made of stills from the lead artists colonoscopy footage.

This is exactly the procedure that I continue to avoid. I will probably die of some terrible, excruciating, undetected disease but, hey, that's life. If it's good enough for my grandparents, it's good enough for me!

If it's any comfort I've had one - and was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, which is now no longer a problem. The worst aspect of the procedure is having to drink the whole huge jug of liquid they get you to make up for the clearout. As Whisky says, with the general anaesthetic you wake up thinking it's still about to happen - 's very strange. There's absolutely no pain and your electrolyte loss having been replaced by the stuff you've drunk, you feel fine, really - not at all dehydrated.

But the general anaesthetic has a half life -- so you're advised not to drink alcohol fer a couple of days (ya can feel very sick & pass out if ya do).

Even though I had some bad news this morning (relating to the other thread of me self-indugently worrying about stuff), I'm really quite happy.
